Default Another peaceful weekend in Sydney

Heres some food for thought to the POMS who perceive that the UK is full of undesirable forgeiners who bring their violent baggage with them and refuse to integrate into their new country.

Just as well that Australia has escaped the minority tensions that you think the UK are plagued with. Well worth the thousands of pounds that DIMIA took off you so that you can live in the land of milk and honey.

Police prepare for more violence after shots fired in Sydney

Police are preparing for more conflict among Iraqis in Sydney after shots were fired during attempts to intimidate voters at the weekend.

Of the 11,800 Iraqis who had registered for the Australian vote, 94.96 per cent turned up by the time polling booths closed at 5pm on Sunday, the Australian election co-ordinator, Bernie Hogan, said yesterday.

But on Saturday, a group in the street opposite the Auburn polling booth took photographs, made videos and warned voters they would become targets.

Sheik Haydar Naji, a Shiite from the al-Albait Islamic Centre in Auburn, told the Herald there were about 20 to 25 people in the group, who supported neither Shiites nor Sunnis but were trying to get them to "fight each other".

"They were holding up signs saying, 'If you vote, you die', which is the same message as al-Zarqawi in Iraq," he said, referring to the Jordanian al-Qaeda terrorist. About 60 people gathered outside the Auburn booth on Saturday to support the vote. The two groups confronted each other and a scuffle broke out.

Graham Matthews, of Democratic Socialist Perspective, who opposes the Iraq election but was not involved in the violence, was running a political booth nearby. "Police came and closed the centre of Auburn," he said. "They told us to move on."

Sheik Naji said his group had complained to the police about the threats and violence, and sought protection.

About 10pm on Sunday, he said, five to 10 people walked along Auburn Road "looking for trouble". They entered a shop and told the proprietor they were going to kill him for voting, then smashed his window. As a crowd gathered, they entered a tobacconist's shop showing photos and asking where they could find the people. They then fired six shots.

Nobody was hit but police said a brawl erupted involving about 100 people. Two cars were damaged. Four people were taken to hospital, one of whom was kept for observation.

Mr Hogan said: "I am not drawing too strong a link, because the brawl was five hours after the close of voting, but there is a bit of community conflict and tension that might be due to the election process."

Superintendent Allan Harding, the local area commander at Flemington, said tensions had increased after Saturday's scuffles.

One group, the Workers Communist Party of Iraq, had applied in advance to stage a non-violent protest against the poll but had committed itself to peaceful action. "Whether someone else turned up with different agendas ... we do not know," Mr Harding said.

The Herald was told the group involved in the weekend violence was not the Communist Party or its Australian supporter, the Socialist Alternative.

And there's Croydon nearby - faithfully modelled after its ugly, English namesake.

Eatstatic, it seems evertime there is a serious crime in OZ you feel the need
to post it on the forum. Do you spend all day trawling through the online Aussie newspapers looking for crimes more significant then shoplifting and drink driving so you can post it on the forum to warn your fellow Poms that
they are in mortal danger if they dare set foot in OZ.
l think l might buy you an Aussie police radio scanner so you spend all day listening into Australians crimes as they are reported to the police, you will probably enjoy it more then your other hobby of trainspotting.

I have to admit it is not often I agree with wombat42 , but I have to say this one not really adding value to the Forum. It is like reading the Daily Mail.

If it was a real life experience it would hold more credibility.

I think that most posters understand the problems in both countries, I can tell you roughly the problem areas in both my home town in the UK and where I have lived in Aus, as well as places of racial tension, where you can buy good dope, etc, etc, etc.

Coming from the SA redneck who has never visited Britain, yet feels the need to rant the same tired old stereotypical one eyed Aussie viewpoint of the UK.

You don't post any news links, as your ignorant views on Britain have no bearing to reality and it is impossible to find any news sources to verify your inane drivel.

Besides which this is a British Expat website, I may no longer reside in OZ (thankfully) yet I have lived there and feel qualified to comment.

Remind us all again WombatIQ4point2, why you are here? You are not British and it seems obvious that you have probably never left SA, let alone OZ?

This forum doesnt need me to warn pom migrants of the limitations of ignorant backward self congratulating OZ, you provide that service every time you post.

Suggest you spend a day in the gallery of a court of petty sessions somewhere around the globe - a litany of people behaving badly.

It was on teletext, but if you blikned you would have missed it!

A similar thing happened in Birmingham with the Indian & Packistani's, the Police arrested 1 woman.
