another computer question...

our computer goes away this thursday when the shippers arrive but i'm still going to need access to internet.... this isn't a problem as santa provided me with a laptop for Xmas.

But i can't seem to take the modem cable (broadband) out of the desktop and put it into the laptop AND get it to work. i get a pop up telling me i've got limited or no access to the network.

so what have i done wrong??

Do you know if the device is a router or a modem? OR if you write the devices make and model I can find out for you.

If it is a modem, then without configuring internet connection sharing you will only ever get one PC connected at any given time.

Although it sounds to me as though your using a router with a strip of CAT5, and all you need do is correctly configure your PC's (laptop) ip address so it's within the same range as the router.

Need more info though, start with the devices make and model ;)

Most broadband connections require you at the fisrt installation to register your computer to the connection. it sounds like the broadband is looking for your desktop. Re-install the software and re-register with laptop.

Cool.

OK so on your desktop could you open up a command line window (start>all programs>accessories>command prompt)

then type the following: ipconfig (then press enter)

do the same on your laptop and tell me what values you have in both (pc and laptop) for ip address, subnet mask and default gateway.

I'd say without, looking at the motorola SB5100 spec sheet it dosent act as a DHCP server so it shouldnt make any difference

Not a silly question at all duder, but the motorola SB5100 can be connected via either USB or CAT5, if the end user was connecting via USB then yes, device drivers would be required, however the previously mentioned error "limited or no connectivity" pertains to your network card and points to the device being connected via CAT5

OK........

So on the laptop, go into control panel (start>control panel) then go into network connections, right click on local area connection, select properties select internet protocol TCP/IP and enter in IP address: 82.41.24.70, subnet mask: 255.255.248.0, default gateway: 82.41.24.1 and DNS server enter as: 62.69.64.134 and secondary DNS enter: 62.69.64.135
Then click OK and OK again and test the connection

Mate when you got your laptop did you setup a network/wireless network with your desktop and laptop? If so you have a router included also?

Mate if you have this kind of setup as explained above and you have just taken your cable out of your router and plugged it into your laptop you wont get a connection. God look at my post count spooky, everytime I look at the clock it's 11 minutes past something, anyone else?
