I don't have an issue with it personally. Not sure how you equate it to walking or breathing but never mind.

It's not compulsory to take it out though in most states. Even if it was, you could always remain in the UK to avoid having to pay it.

We have non compulsory Ambulance Insurance. We ALSO give donations to the local Ambos, most of ours are volunteers.

You might want to rethink that - of course you can take the risk but getting a bill for hundreds if not thousands of dollars (all depends on where you are and where you are taken to) can be a real disincentive. It isnt like it costs much. Remember that Australia isnt UK and doesnt have the NHS, medical stuff is user pays or co-pays here.

The NHS isn't free either!! A little thing call NI comes out of everyones pay and its compulsory.
Its a bit like UK pensions. If they're not compulsory then alot of people wont have one then complain when they retire for not having any money. Make medical insurance compulsory in oz then theres no complaints when the medical bills come in.

You are right... let's have an 11% NI/Medicare levy instead of the 1.5%, but only for those who don't like the current system

Are you first in the queue to pay ?

It's only loaded once in Queensland. I think everyone else has to make an effort to get it.
