Am I doing it right ?? Advice needed
I have planned a validation trip / job search trip in March 2012. This is what I am planning. I will be buying return tickets.
1. Take a 6 week vacation from my current job, come down to Brisbane and search for a job in Australia during this period. Extend the vacation by another month or so, if the job market looks promising
2. I have a brother who lives in Brisbane, and me and my family will be staying with him
3. Enroll my elder daughter into a school as soon as we land. She will complete grade 4 in India in march. since the schools start in Late Jan / early Feb in Australia, will she be accepted into grade 5 even though she has missed a couple of months ?
4.Apply for drivers license, open bank account and complete all other formalities.
Even though I am buying return tickets, the intent is to find a job and stay back. However, I am unsure of the job market in IT ( I am more of a generalist at a manager level than a specialist), and am unable to make the leap of faith and resign from my current job before leaving for Australia.
If all goes well, and I get a job, I'll come back to India, resign, serve out my notice period, ship my stuff, and then fly back to Australia. Wife and kids may stay back in Australia depending on the situation.
Since I'll be staying with my brother and his family, I am not too worried about the finances part, as rent, which is a major chunk of the expenses will not be an issue. I am planning to take approx 4000 dollars with me, and have access to another 10K if need arises.
Right now, I am a bundle of nerves trying to think what is the best way forward. Looking for a job in a new country is a scary thought. Do you think 6 weeks will be enough to find something, for starters ?

Try Data3 in Toowong. They were really helpful and used to do a lot of government contracts - not sure if they still do though. We didn't end up staying in Brisbane but they kept in touch for a while afterwards anyway.

So I get your plan to an extent, however I would not be doing any of the practical stuff like driving licence, enrolling in school etc until I *know* I am staying.

Worst case, wife will pick up a job in day care (She was a certified ECE teacher in US), and stay with the kids while I come back to India after my vacation is over to resign and go back and start looking again. I hope it doesn't come to that.
I am also thinking of approaching my current employer in Dec / Jan and ask for a transfer to Australia. Can happen, though I don't have my hopes too high on that. But I will still try.

I have some jitters about getting a job, but the missus is pretty firm that we are not coming back, except to resign and pack our bags. The other concern is, assuming it takes 2 months to find a job, getting my daughter enrolled into a school in the middle of the year might turn problematic and she might end up losing a year, which I want to avoid.

And definitely if your company has an Australian office you should ask for a transfer. The worst that can happen is that they say no.
By the way, six weeks, you might get lucky but on the other hand it would be very easy for it to take longer than that.
