Altona North

Hi everyone,

Me and the family, husband and 2 children, will be arriving in Melbourne in 5 weeks and 4 days!!! We have secured an apartment for 6 months in Altona North, (millers road). The question is... does anybody have any views/opinions about this area??? It will be only a temporary stay as hoping to move on to williamstown after we have settles in and container has arrived. It would be great if someone actually lived on millers road to express their opinion..

Thanks a lot the Powles family

I reckon given the choice most people would prefer Williamstown to Altona North.

Millers Road itself is a fairly main road and most Melburnians would know its name from the traffic reports about the West Gate bridge.

Millers road as Buzzy says is a very main road, Altona and Altona North are very industrial areas, check out the chemical plants and refineries, when a construction project happens here the workers get paid a site allowance for smells believe it or not, get to Williamstown ASAP in my opinion that's not a bad spot, good luck with the move!

It's a good area, Millers Rd itself is a main road so very busy, with lots of trucks but I think they are only during the day.

North Altona/South Kingsville has some really nice places and it's pretty handy to the city. Where the houses are it is not industrial - don't listen to anyone that lives in the East as they general have zero clue when it comes to knowledge of the West.

Williamstown is very over-rated BTW. I think Spotswood/Newport/Yarraville are better.

Kirsty

6 months will go very quickly, and it appears your arriving the end of November so Dec/Jan the holiday period means its really only 4 months of normal traffic.

Hi Kirsty
I just left Williamstown to move to Sydney for job reasons.

Millers square shopping centre looks a bit run down but its ok and you have Altona gate just a bit further up. the library there is very good.

You will find the people friendly and welcoming, the libraries have lots of information leaflets.
Altona has a market every Tuesday. you can use all the libraries in hobsons bay on the same ticket.
Highpoint is a good shopping centre nearby and if you drive through Williamstown to get to the city you don't need to go near the west gate bridge.
Werribee plaza is the other large shopping centre.

If you have any questions send me a pm

good luck and have fun

oh when you do move to williamstown dont forget to ask the council for your parking fee exemption sticker

I think the problem with Spotswood/Newport/Yarraville are that they attract a lot of through traffic (with associated noise and pollution) where as Williamstown is a destination and not a place you go through to get to some where. Hence it's attraction. The down side is that this attractions costs $'s

Having been a resident of Altona North for quite a few years, I've never heard that one. And occasionally the refinery smells but not often (strict controls). In our 6 years there we never had a power cut- thanks Mobil!

AN is a huge area- the Millers Road to Newport is mostly residential (and becoming more so by the day as all the industrial areas are flattened for housing). The west part is more industrial.

The top of Millers is busy but as you go further down to Altona, it is much quieter...depends which end you mean (it is a good few kms long). The shopping centre at Altona Gate is very 1960s ish but is OK..

Williamstown is pretty expensive- always has been but it is getting more so. South Kingsville, Spotswood and Newport are good residential areas.
You have not said the age of your children. There are a lot of great primary schools in this area, but sadly only one good high school which is tightly zoned (Ukecadet can tell you about that)

Agreed with the posts in general about the area. It does depend on what end of Millers Rd or which part to be honest. Industry at one end; Westgate at other; maybe close to cnr Mason St the best?

Was Altona Gate Shopping Centre mentioned? Very handy. (yes it was, reading back).

As Williamstown has become more expensive there has been a 'ripple effect' which has seen Newport, Altona, Spotswood, Yarraville, Kingsville, Seddon become more sought after and the housing stock has improved as people have done up old houses and put newer ones in. The 'demographic' of all these suburbs has changed radically in my lifetime. I can remember when the west side of Millers Rd was a High School, Technical School and paddocks to Werribee.

Re parking sticker (got one) is it 3016 address only or anywhere in Hobson's Bay Council? Certainly worth it for parking in Nelson Place/down the beach/going to restaurants etc.

Good luck with move.

Hi thanks for the reply.

they are 6 and 4. Another question what is the legal age for children to start school? Here its 5. Although my 2 children have always gone to a pre-school from the age of 2 due to me working and being in college.

Thanks
