Alternative travel arrangements?

Alternative travel arrangements?
Dear all,
We're hopefully out to Oz before the end of 2002.
The question is, does anyone know of any alternatives to flying out to Oz (sensible please!) as my parents aren't too keen on flying. A sea voyage would see to e a sensile option ut I can't see to find anything on the internet.
Perhaps they could accompany our personal effects in the container??????!!!!???
Cheers,
MAX

Re: Alternative travel arrangements?
You can get out to Aus on a cruise liner - I think it's a P and O ship but it takes around 40 days each way and is quite expensive. I believe it arrives into Sydney.
Hope this helps

Re: Alternative travel arrangements?
Maybe check out http://members.aol.com/CruiseAZ/cruises.htm , if you look under Freighters there are some reasonable fares from Europe to Australia, eg
'Fares include accommodation, meals and port taxes, and are per person, and are subject to change.
Full Round Voyage 70 days £5,500
From Fos/Barcelona to Fremantle (1st Call) 20 days £1,800
From Fos/Barcelona to Melbourne (1st call) 24 days £2,160
From Fos/Barcelona to Sydney 26 days £2,340
From Fos/Barcelona to Singapore 47 days £4,250
From Fos/Barcelona to Auckland 31 days £2,790 '
But I guess you need to travel overland to Spain to begin with. I think there are loads more, just do a search on Yahoo 'cruise UK Australia'
All the best

Re: Alternative travel arrangements?
As Australia is an island, you really have only two alternatives, plane or boat,
unless you're a very good swimmer and don't mind dodging sharks
Sea cruises are an expensive way to get to Australia. It might be cheaper to see if
they could travel as passengers on a cargo ship - apparently this is possible,
although it's only an option for those who won't get bored despite long hours at sea.
I haven't got any web links handy, but you could try getting in touch with the big
cargo lines and see what they say.

Re: Alternative travel arrangements?
If you do a search look under world cruises, you don't have to travel the whole trip
but when I checked into this you could do a portion of a world cruise that would stop
in Australia. It takes a fairly long time and can be expensive, though if you had the
time and $$'s could be fun. There are freighters that do have rooms for passengers,
they take even longer and you are strictly on your own for entertainment. I remember
reading though that the food and lodging can be pretty nice though. If I didn't have
kids, I'd seriously consider it myself. Maybe they could take a train part of the way
across Europe and take a shorter cruise from a port closer to Australia?

Re: Alternative travel arrangements?
Many thanks for all the replies.
BTW - not so much of a problem with the 'b' key, more of a problem with lazy fingers.....
(Not to mention the rest of me that feels lazy most of the time too.......)
Thanks,
MAX

Re: Alternative travel arrangements?
They could always go overland!
UK - Moscow - Beijing all possible via train. Then down through to Australia either
by ship, or by road through Vietnam to Indonesia and PNG
Think it is safer, cheaper and more enjoyable to fly - get them one of those 'scared
flyers' courses for Xmas!
