...WTF is going on with the exchange rate?
Has someone told them we're changing our money soon?

Wish I knew. I've got to bite the bullet soon as I'm due to complete on my block of land at the end of the month!

It seems to be going in a downward spiral at the mo. I'm wandering whether to take minimum we'll need for first few months...then exchange over there (HIFX, Australia), does anyone think this is a plan?

First yer car now the exchange rate
looking at exchange rates across the board the £ has weaken against all major currencies
There was a post the other day someone made with a report from a currency exchange company, that stated it saw the blip (of being over 2.40) related to the Katrina disaster and the unknown re the oil, which has now settled down and did not look too promising re changing £ to AUS$.
Can't add any more re £weakness and why it continues

I wondered if the oil / petrol thing might be a factor.
Fingers crossed it starts creeping back up again then
