It can be marginally more expensive but there again it depends which airline's cost you are comparing it with.
.......and yes it does take more time as its a longer flight - most flites will stop off at LA (some do in new york)........
.if you use Air New Zealand via LA, you will also need to stop off in NZ

Thanks Terry,
So I guess if you can stop the wife taking half the damn house in the suitcase and needing more allowance, its probably best via asia.

hi, Japan Airlines(JAL) were absolutley brill, choice of food from a menu, free drinks during the flight inc alcohol and really nice staff, yes, this was economy class- the down side is that they fly you to Tokoyo then Quantas fly you to Aus- Quantas looked like the poor relies, staff uninterested,no food, b'fast was a carton of orange juice and generally shabby.
Singapore airlines also v. good, though not as good as JAL.Kate.

Flying you to Tokyo is not a downside it is a great place for a 3/4 day break interesting sites and a chance to get over the half jet lag you have then you go on to australia in a bright frame of mind.

Hi Chris
Well even on some flights via Asia you can get double baggage allowance for all passengers over 2 years old (provided you have paid for a seat for them) as long as you are flying with a permanent visa and it is your first flight into OZ after obtaining the PR. This will mean that you each get a 40KG allowance, which isn’t too bad. There are no restrictions on the number of pieces of luggage as long as the total is up to 40KG and no one piece of luggage exceeds 32kg. (above 32kg is too heavy for the baggage handlers - think its pat of their health and safety program)
Singapore Airlines definitely do this as I've just called them about it. All you need to do is show your visas at the check in desk.
Cheers

hi, with regards to the 40 kg of baggage, i wouldn't recommend just turning up at the flight and expect them to accomadate you, we had to inform the airline prior to travelling. Wouldn't leave that sort of thing to the last minute- 40 kg each sounds alot until you have to live with it until the freight arrives.Kate.
