Air freight vs Sea freight - which is the cheapest?
Hi, we plan to ship our stuff to Perth when we emigrate soon, however had a conversation recently with someone who said, that air freight can work out roughly the same as sea freight. I would just like people's opinions/experience on this please. Reason being, I will be travelling with 2 kids, and will have a 60kg allowance. Given that hubby is going imminently and already has gone over his 20kg, I am sure I will be over on allowance. But we will have to take things with us on flight that we do not really need straight away, like valuables, jewelry, important paperwork/doc etc which will all add up...If I could send this by air freight separately at close to cost of shipping then it would be great. At least it won't take weeks getting there...so any advise would be great, website recommendations, rough costs per kg/package/carton, time taken etc, thanks

I've just shipped some stuff by airfreight (clothes, shoes, etc.,) as we wanted it quicker than our seafreight. I'm sorry I can't help with costs as it was a company move and also just from Singapore.
However I would say do NOT ship anything valuable, even as airfreight. Jewellery and important original paperwork should be in your hand luggage, not even checked luggage.
Sorry, I know it's tough (2 of us had over 30kg of hand luggage the other week ) but it's the only safe way. I would also advise scanning your paperwork as a backup.

Try Excess Baggage for sending small amounts by air...

I agree with Seasider.
We shipped a 20' container, but shipped 6 of the largest packing cartons by air.
You have to be careful with air shipping, in that the stuff has to be heavy or they charge by the cubic foot. 4 years have passed since I did it, but we shipped toys, books, clothes, bedding (not duvets), towels, etc, to get us started. I'm sure that if you look up shippers in Yellow Pages you will be able to contact someone to give you decent advice.
We used Crown Relocations for our container, and they gave us, for free, strong cartons for our air shipment, even though it was with a different company.
The shippers collected the boxes the day before our flight, and we got them a few days after we arrived.
As Seasider says, do not ship important paperwork, jewellery, etc. This should always be in your handluggage.
Good Luck!

Re: Air freight vs Sea freight - which is the cheapest?
I am shipping majority of my things, but will have 2 or 3 boxes going by airfreight so it is there by the time I arrive (having a prolonged stop over)
I have been quoted £5 per kg which is much better than being whacked £25/kg if I am over weight (baggage wise) at the airport and I know I will be.
Will be airfreighting work clothes, basic kitchen things (kettle, toaster, coffee machine, some plates, knives, forks, coffee cups) duvets, linen, radio, blow up mattress and shoes that I will need when I arrive for work etc etc. Its that or else buying whilst waiting for sea freight to arrive, which means its pointless in taking it in the first place. I am lucky work is paying for this though.
Seafreight will be picked up in a weeks time, and airfreight the day before I fly (3 weeks time). I am using Allfreight. 2 of my friends have used them and have had no issues. They also making up a custom box for my 'small' tv and charging £25 for shipping it (hence why I am airfreighting a radio)

Re: Air freight vs Sea freight - which is the cheapest?
Ok, have been looking at Excess international, and what I can work out is it costs approx £4.50 per kg, for cartons of 25kgs or more. i.e one carton of £25kg will cost £115 roughly. By shipping it in container, it would cost £4.50 per cubic feet, and 25kg carton would be 4.5cf = £20. Not quite the same costs!!! But appreciate tht it gets there quicker and if you need the stuff there soon enough its the best method, also its still cheaper to send by air freight rather than being charge £30/kg for excess at check-in...
