Agents finding jobs from UK
Hi
All advice I have been given so far about finding work is that it is near impossible to get interviews from the UK and most people only start to find work once they are over there.
However, someone told me they know an agent who could get them the visa and a job. Does anyone know of such an agent? Or is this BS?! I already have the visa bit in hand, but wouldn't mind some help on the job front!
Thanks

My husband is a qualified electrician working on a nuclear plant and is Instrument trained as well, however he has not been on the tools for the last 2 years as he was promoted to a team leader in charge of instrument mechanics, fitters and electrician.
I work as a receptionist in a job bank.

Put yourself in the employer's shoes.
If you had a position available would you give it to someone not in Oz or someone in Oz who could start straight away ? Its a no brainer
For those sought after specialised skills/jobs for which there are a shotage of people having them then of course there are agencies who will advertise abroad. Again its a no brainer

Can't comment personally, but my wife's currently looking for a job and talking to recruitment agents. One she spoke to said that companies advertising online tend to get hundreds of applications from overseas, often from people who have no relevant skills and are just applying to everything. The result is that the poor sap reading the CVs tends to reject anything as soon as it looks even remotely inapplicable - and an overseas address is probably something that would cause instant rejection.
The advice was to ring up and speak to whomever is the contact for the job (might be someone at the employer, might be a recruitment agent) and make it clear that you're available right now and have the right to work in Australia (and incidentally demonstrate that you can communicate in English). Of course, if neither of those are true, then unfortunately you're not going to be at the head of the queue.
I can sympathise with both sides: a year ago in the UK I was recruiting and sifting CVs sent in response to an online advert and the vast number of completely irrelevant applications from overseas (including more than 20% without the right to work in the UK) made it very difficult to keep objective when reading CVs. We also used phone interviews as a first pass and there were many applicants who claimed to have good spoken English but frankly were unable to hold a phone conversation.
I think BAY's comment is right on the money.
Cheers

While we're on the subject...has anyone got advise for tailoring CVs to the Aussie market? I guess there are loads of websites out there with tips but I'm being lazy/haven't got that far yet...

All have said its great and doesn't need changing. I'm not aware there is such a thing as a 'UK style' CV and an 'Oz style' CV. A good CV is a good CV, whichever country you are in.
