Hi Luke

What state are you moving to - you need to look up the RTA for each state as the rule differ a bit.

Here in NSW you can get your licence at 16 after sitting a written test. Currently you have to have 'logged' 50 hours supervised driving with a legal adult before you can sit your test at 17. Then you drive on Red P plates for two years and are restricted to 90 km/hr then one year on agree I think at a restriction of 100 km/hr. In NSW you will also be restricted soon to only having one passenger under 21 after 11.00 at night.

My 17 year old has just passed his test and is a very happy bunny - me his mum was happier sitting beside him while he drove for the last year - I think he is very happy to now be on his own in a car.

I also think there is talk of the 50 hours increasing to 100 soon. There is a lot of work involved in getting your driving test. But my son said it was still great fun at being able to drive at 16 with supervision.

Cheers

In fact in queensland you can apply for your provisional licence at 16 1/2 but you can not sit your practical test until you are 17yrs. welll that is my understanding anyway.

I think that's the same everywhere. You can have your L permit 6 months before you are allowed to actually drive unsupervised. So for SA, you can get your L plates at 16, but can't apply for your P plates until 161/2

Western Australia is a fair bit different in order than NSW (which I spoke about earlier). You can get your L's at 16 but need to pass a driver assessment (practical test) at 16 and 1/2. Then you do practical training with L plates and a supervising driver until 17.

I did not see any talk of P plates - Does anyone know - do you not have to use these in WA?
