After five years, Australia is starting to grow on me...

After five years, Australia is starting to grow on me...
I have lived in Oz for five years and have pretty much had an on-off thing about living here. Every year, I decide that we will leave the following year, but don't follow through.
Finally my wife and I are really planning to leave in 2012 and we are even doing up our garden to make it easier for the place to sell. My wife and I joke that once the gardnen is done it might be so nice we won't want to leave!
The funny thing is, now that we have put a time frame on leaving, I have started to enjoy being here and finally after 5 years, Australia is growing on me.
Has it taken anyone else over five years for Australia to finally grow on you?
Or has it started growing on you when you have the clear prospect of leaving?

Yeah I know what you mean, after 5 years it gets into the blood. As much as I love home I don't think I could leave now.

Are you sure you are not just being ground into submission?

Hell, if you stay in one spot for five years, I'd be amazed if something didn't grow on you!

The best advice I got from someone was "you have to return home to remind yourself why you left in the first place".

I find that it is the subconscious things that make you realise what your feelings for a place are.
I still moan about the place but I caught myself planning to bring my UK pension over the other day. I got a quote for its value and worked out what it would do to my super. It never crossed my mind that the decision meant that I would probably end up staying here for good.

Q: "Do you miss home?"
A: "Nah, I'll be there in 3 hours"
etc,etc
It's laugh a minute in Vimsville.
I also cannot spell "conscious" without the aid of a spill chucker.

I like that! And it appears to be true, plenty of ex-pat friends have finally felt settled in Oz after their first trip 'home'... human nature is we remember things with rose tinted glasses... but there must have been a reason we took the plunge and left
