Default Advice required for a pregnant British PhD student

Hi there,

My husband and I are both from the UK and are here on student visas (subclass 574) until 2011 as we are postgraduate PhD students (living on scholarships) in Hobart.

We're expecting our 1st baby in July, which will be born here in Australia. We are not planning to return to the UK (even for a visit for at least another 14 months due to research commitments). We wondered if anyone has any advice about the following:

1) Are we eligible for any UK child benefit supports/grants? We are a low-income family right now.
2) Are we eligible for any Australian support?
3) We have the understanding that our child is going to be a British citizen only (as we're are temp. residents on this student visa), how do we register the baby?

If anyone has any advice from being in a similar situation this would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

1. No, doesnt look like it http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTax...fies/DG_173532

2. No, have to be permanent http://www.centrelink.gov.au/interne..._residence.htm

3. I think you just register the child with the local BMD registry and then get him/her a British passport (form C2 I think) and apply for his/her visa. AFIK the British HC doesnt do birth registrations here any more.

Baby will automatically have the visa, you just have to apply for a visa stamp.

It's never been available in Australia ...

No, you are not entitled to any support either from the UK or Australia.

Baby will have your student visa but you still need to advise immigration and get paperwork updated.

Pretty sure my son has a Consular registration certificate of some description but he was born in 1981!
