Default Advice RE study route for entry into OZ

I am wondering if anyone can give us some advice?

We really want to move to Australia, however our problem is that we don't fit into any categories for a visa.

After taking advice from various migration agents, the only route that we can go along is for my hubby to retrain in Oz and self finance, the move.

Obviously this will be a massive risk, in that we will have to pay for our tutition fees and also we will have to pay for our children to attend school too and put a roof over our heads. We don't have lots of money but we could afford to do this and support ourselves, however we would then be practically starting again when he has finished studying. It is most likely that my hubby would retrain, for a career that would give us 60 points toward residency when he has completed his course. I have a career in medical sales and have been advised by some companies that my experience could help me gain some part time employment as I would only be allowed to work for 20 hours per week.
Has anyone any advice on this route or indeed has anyone taken this route??

OR do you think we are mad for considering this risky way in??

Very risky (and bloody expensive), but it is possible. I have just completed my degree and we are now starting our PR application

Just be aware if OH does retrain im sure you need at least three years ongoing experiance in the field you work before you go for the 136 skilled independant (thats if you are going down that route). good luck either way.

Depends on the chosen field, but generally recent graduates have exemption from work experience requirements

However there is talk of an end to this exemption on 1 July 2007.

It would be a bloody expensive route to take. Also, be aware that the medical sales industry in Australia is very small compared to UK, with a few companies specialising in selling equipment from the many. Make sure you check out the job market before you commit. I was shocked at how small the scientific sector is.

We are doing exactly the same, I am going to re-train as a hairdresser, something I have always wanted to do, even though the wages are low, we are willing to give it a go, my husband is a golf teacher along with being a Sales Executive in the IT industry so hopefully he will get part time work I also hope to get part time work in the Beauty industry. We don't have the points for skills as we have been out of the UK for 3 years running a business but its not earning enough for the business visa. We are taking our 2 young sons and as you know will have to pay their school fees too. We are looking at it as an experience which we have wanted to do for years, we may or may not enjoy it but I am re-training which has to be a bonus and it may prove very expensive but its an experience nonetheless for all the family. If we like it while being there for the 2 years and if we can, maybe we will apply for PR but who knows, at the end of the day we are still "young" enough to go for it and fortunately have a few pennies saved to help us along, yes our family think we are mad but they thought that when we moved to Spain. If you are willing to give something a bloody good go then why not, we may have to go back to the UK afterwards but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. We hope to be in Brisbane by February because that's when my course starts!!! :scared: Good luck to what ever you decide.

Good luck to you too! I hope your course goes well, it's encouraging to come across families looking at taking the same route. I've always felt that "ohh well we are young enough" However, we are beginning to realise that time is creeping up on us. Whilst we are only 33 & 34 we feel compelled to make a decision and to stop dreaming about doing it. Our eldest is now 12 and we feel its now or never. Did you use an agent to help you apply for your course?

We have been given a website CRICOS to search for courses. ANy advice on applying for courses would be really helpful. We are considering SAustralia on the basis that perhaps in 2 years they will give us state sponsorhsip to stay and a migration agent seemed to think school fees were cheaper. Once again any info would be really helpful. Thanks

Reading this and other posts on this thread really highlight Australia's equitable system. It seems that even those who don't fit into the categories have a good chance of cracking it in the end just by hard work and innovative thinking. You don't find this in other systems so much (like US, Canada) where pretty much you have a job offer first and go, and if you don't, you're stuffed.

So in a twenty-first century way at least, Australia has retained that element of the "pioneer settler" who can make it if he stays the course.

I came here with my hubby and son in January 06 and am a student nurse. Its the best thing we have ever done. Yes, it's expensive, but worth every penny. The 20 hour a week thing is a pain for my hubby sometimes, but we manage. I don't work yet but I could work 20 hours per week in term time and unlimited hours in my holidays. I have three months off at the moment! I absolutely love it and have not regretted it at all. We haven't looked back!

WOW, another encouraging story! Its funny because I even considered nurse training as a possible option if hubby couldnt find a suitable course. Do you pay for your child to go to school? Can I be so rude to ask - how much?? Did you use a migration agent or an education consultant to get on your course?
Thanks

No I knew the University I wanted to get in to so applied, got accepted, applied for visa and the rest is history. All happened in four months. Sold house after a month and we were off! Student visas are easy to apply for you don't need to waste money on an agent. It's really straightforward. My visa is for three years so we had to prove we had my Uni fees, son's school fees for three years etc. My son is five soon and starts school in January and the fees are $4,000 per year which is a lot cheaper than I expected. I think it depends on the state, school and age of the child. We are in the process of buying a house now and we had to get Foreign Investment Review Board approval for that as we are on three year student visas but that wasn't a problem either! It is the best thing we've ever done. Every morning I wake up I still cannot believe I live here - it's so beautiful. I will apply for residency nearing the end of my degree.

If you want any info etc feel free to private message me.

Good luck.

Rachel
