Advice re renting
Hi everyone,
My boyfriend and I are playing the waiting game at the moment ( the same as everyone else) as DIMIA have everything at the mo. So obviously we now start to worry about other things like if we get the visa where do we stay, can we rent before we go out, is that actually a good idea????
I have seen a few threads about this but would really like to hear if anyone has recently moved to Oz and had accomm set up before they go or if it is even possible. We are moving (hopefully - visa permitting) to Sydney and I have looked into short term accomm initially but would very much appreciate some advice from those in the know.
Ta very Much

Usually not easy to get the standard 6 or 12 month lease from overseas, if at all. Real Estate folk like to see you first.
I am sure the Sydneysiders may have pointers for good accommodation.
Good luck

I would advise 2-3 weeks in furnished accommodation. That allows time to look around and see what suits YOU.
In the past it has been quite easy to find and move into unfurnished rentals with 2 weeks. I am not sure what it is like now in Sydney, as I keep hearing about a reduction in available rentals due to the NSW Investment property market problem. Maybe someone in NSW can clarify that.
As a guide to costs, a short term Furnished place will normally cost about double the equivalent unfurnished rental.

We took one such for $720pw in Manly and it was hell on earth. Not making the same mistake again so are renting in Bowral to check the place out: rent is a bit more but it's lovely here.
Be afraid - be very afraid! Seriously, don't leap in to a long contract.

I agree. There are some real gems in Sydney for really good prices but you have to wade through quite a bit of rubbish to get to them. It's amazing the differences in places going for the same price so take a bit of time. If you can find something short term while you look it will probably be worth it. There are servicd apartments in Sydney which aren't too horrenously priced if it's not for long. Good Luck!!

In response to Jimtrish's comment that its easy to get a rental from the UK, that may be the case in FNQ, but its far from true in Brisbane (well bayside anyway). I know people here who have had alot of problems finding a rental even after they have gotten here - the demand far outweighs the availability.
No clue whats its like in Sydney.
