Seriously folks, I haven't made it up.

That's why I am on here asking. I personally thought it seemed to good to be true and I'm trying to figure out what the snag is. I keep thinking that there is something missing which I am not aware about and which is going to make it alot less attractive.

I had never considered Australia before as I had always thought it was too far away from home; however, having received this offer now, I think Australia will be more than perfect for me.

I have been trying to find out about Perth and I have reads lots of comments about how expensive it is; however, I think that sort of offer should more than suffice.

Let me just add that it is a specialist type construction role for which I have worked in before in the Middle East, so that should be taken into consideration when considering the offer.

Regards,

SimplySamuel
Ok if it's true then take it, it sounds excellent. The only people I could think paying that sort of money would be Chevron???

You sure you're going to be based in Perth?

JGC standard deals are doing 10hr days, 6 days a week, 16 weeks on camp, 10 days off - package looks reasonable if you want to live on a POW Camp!!

I am a 35yr old QS and have received a job offer for Perth. I would probably be travelling over on my own. The employer would provide a 457 visa.
The offer is:-
company provided furnished apartment
company provided car
nett monthly salary of AUD 15,000 (i.e. takehome - employer would pay taxes / superannuation)
60 days leave a year
3 flights home a year (to UK)
Is that as good an offer as I think it is or am I missing something.
Thanks,

Hi SimplySamuel,
I am in a similar frame of mind as you, I think.
I have an offer from a company in Perth - local terms dayrate AUD 1600 per day which if I work 220 days per year equates to AUD 352,000 per year (too good to be true?). However I would rent my own accommodation, pay for my own flights home, buy my own car, etc. I believe that if you add your package up in monetary terms, your number would be close to or more than my AUD 352,000 per year (interesting huh?).
My sums indicate I would/could blow AUD 70,000 per year, living/working in Perth, while wifey and kids stay back home in UK. Then I'd spend about AUD 20,000 a year in flights.
So it still seems worth it but like you I'm nervous that there may be a catch somewhere. The catch may be that Perth is crazy expensive but my web research has come up with conflicting data so far. Someone somewhere on this site says you should divide your Aus gross by 2.2 to arrive at equivalent UK spending power - seems a bit harsh and conservative to me but this seems a good baseline from which to start.
Another factor is the GBP/AUD exchange rate; of course at the moment it's great if you're earning AUD and sending it back to UK. I can't see the GBP strengthening for years, plus I can't see AUD weakening significantly, so I believe all's good. Exch rates always a risk of course, but I think this is a risk worth taking.
Let the battle of the spreadsheets begin!
In the end I will probably go for it, another reason being that it's fun to live/work away from home, jet setting about and all that!
Cheers,

Sounds great!

Only thing I would check is that the figure is definately the take home amount and that they aren't putting you in one of the less desirable areas in Perth, I would also check the contract to see if they're locking you in for a certain period and if that suits you.

Also are you getting paid while on leave? That is a LOT of leave to offer so I'm wondering if they only pay while you're working. EG $15k per month for 12 months = $180k, less 3 months leave ($45k) leaves you with $135k ... which is still a very decent amount!

Finally get them to specifiy leave, as they only pay out annual leave so if they're offering 12 weeks in total .... but 6 weeks of that is sick leave then you will only get that sick leave payment if you're actually sick (although some places do pay out sick leave ... another thing to check on contract offer)

Hope that helps
Good Luck!

Simply put, I think that's an AMAZING offer - and that is coming from someone who has worked in QS/Contracts Management in the oil & gas and construction industries for 11 years, with Middle Eastern experience (just like you). I have NEVER seen an offer like that on the table for myself or any of my other friends in the industry... certainly not over the past 5yrs or so. Sounds too good to be true, but if it is, I'd take advantage of it. As long as you're not looking for a lively party-town to live in.
