Re: advice on perth fireservice
hi
I understand the WA fire service are in the process of changing their standing orders so that they will recruit UK FFs in without them having to do the recruits course and at a higher wage level. The person I spoke to has no idea when this would be put into place though.
How long you done? Where in WA are you thinking of going to? Have you anything else to fall back on? PM me if you feel like a chat. It would be good to touch base with a fellow FF as I am scraed stiff about not having a job!!!!

Firefighter recruitment PRINT
The 2007-08 Firefighter Recruitment Campaign has closed. No decision has been made as to when we will be advertising for our next recruitment campaign.
Should you require information in relation to our recruitment process please download the information package.
See: www.fesa.wa.gov.au/internet/default.aspx
Have you already applied or are you considering doing so when you get here? PS, they'll probably start again when they know the budget in the new financial year.

According to the WA FESA site, they aren't recruiting at the moment and have no info as to when they are going to again.

Hi John
Yes all the stations are full time. The areas not covered by career firefighters would be backed up by volunteers.

There is allot to do in perth and with you being very sporty and social I’m sure that you would get on very well here. Because it is on the coast there are loads of watersports you can take part in, also there are loads of national parks etc. up north there is a place that I definitely want to go to which is called shark bay they have sea cows and sting rays and whales that you can go swimming with. If you like nature you will definitely find allot to do over here. And I know loads of people including my husband who think that this is the best place in the world.
I would suggest that you look on the internet and find out as much as you can about it before you come, If you can get over for a visit that would be a good idea.
I have a lot of phone calls from English firefighters here on holiday who a desperate to find a way to get back.
regards

Hi J
We are going to have to stop e mailing each other or people are going to start talking!
Can I ask you a few questions ?On a personal note what is WA like to live? We are a "young" 40.Our kids (youngest 18) are off our hands now and we hardly ever have a free weekend due to socialising and going out. We are very sporty. Is WA for us do you think? We have been to Oz twice now but not WA.
Many thanks
JOHN

Hi again John
Yes it would be big city perth which I’m sure is a lot different from big city Sydney. More like big country town!! Although they struggle to get people to go to country areas, such as geraldton, kalgoorlie and Albany, so if you were to say on your application that you wanted to move to one of these places that may increase your chances. (Not definitely though). Although if you did put that you were interested in country they might hold you to it!!
I hope that you really enjoy VERY hot weather. I have been here for a year and am longing for rain!!!
Regards,
J

Hi J
You have just made my day!!! Its raining here and we cant wait to get to oz. Now I know that this is jumping ahead big time but what areas do you usually put new "recruits"? I know in NSW Fire service most of the new entrants go to Sydney as opposed to the suburbs.I wondered whether this is the same in WA? (Big city Perth as opposed to Big city Sydney!!!!!)
JOHN
Hi John
As I said previously we are not sure of the ins and outs of it at the moment, but you would definitely be able to apply while still in the UK. If you were being considered for a position then a phone interview would take place (we are a few decades behind on the technology front). So you could potentially start as soon as you land. 2010 sounds good! I feel confident that the lateral entry policy will be up and running by then. Fingers crossed J so if you look at the FESA website every now and then you will be able to see how things are progressing, or you can email me and I’ll let you know where things are at.
regards

Hi
Thats great news! So how would it work? Do you have to wait till you are in the WA and then apply or would you be able to have web cam interviews etc and start as soon as we "land"? We are looking to come in spring 2010.
Many thanks
JOHN
Hi John
We are hoping very shortly to have a lateral entry policy up and running, which would allow firefighters with so many years experience to join FESA at a higher level than trainee. This policy has not yet been approved so I don’t yet know the details of exactly how it will work. Although this will enable firefighters from overseas to apply they would still have to have Australian citizenship or residency as we are not able to offer sponsorship. If you wanted to keep an eye on our website www.fesa.wa.gov.au/internet any announcement with regards to the lateral entry policy will go up on there first. Or if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me.
Kind regards
J

many thanks
