Default Advice on getting credit - having hassle

Hi Guys

I have never before really had debt. Never had a credit card or anything, just the way i was brought up. However, i would like to get one and applied and have been refused. So worried i obtained my credit report and sure enough it is effectivly blank - just a record from a company i thought about getting a car through but didnt go ahead with. So it seems i am in a position of not being able to get credit because i have never had credit. Any advice?

We had no problems getting a credit card even though we also had no credit history.

Have you tried applying for a credit card with your bank?

To get a credit card you generally need to have a job and be earning a minimum amount.

I am involved in the credit industry and although different lenders have different criteria, unless you are asking for an amount where you cannot service the repayments or are very new to the country for example, as long as you meet basic T&Cs having a blank or small credit history file should not be a reason to deny you. Without knowing your circumstances though it is hard to tell.
FYI, soon a positive credit report system will e introduced so that if you have taken credit out with a lender and have met your obligations, a positive note can be left on your file for future credit providers to view.

Best of luck

What is your visa? As Temp visa often can not get a credit card until they are PR. Some do but a lot of temp holders get turned down.

We both have credit cards with ANZ and are on 457 visas (with less than two years left on the visa) - we do bank with them too though.

Who did you apply to? I'd check around and try all the others. We got ours no trouble as soon as we arrived. That was with Virgin (now the Westpac card) but plenty of others about.

I didnt apply to my bank as another company were offering a very good deal. I am a proffesional in the mining industry and so earn a respectable salary and have very few obligations. Small rent and day to day bills, which for two of us arent huge - dont even run a car as i am away a lot and DW doesnt drive. I earn over twice the minimum income they specified. We are though on 457 visas with about 2.5 years on the current one - this is my second. And in the process for perm residence. I am speaking to the department who rejected it who have agreed to review. Shall see what happens and if no good maybe look at changing my bank account to someone who will also issue a credit card.
