Advice on car buying in Perth

Hi all
I need to buy a car asap after arrival in Feb. Think the car sales people might 'see me coming' :p In UK I would only normally pay approx £3k and have been lucky that they have lasted well. Nothing too fancy, just reliable and cheap running costs/parts.
I'm under the impression your better off buying a new car in Oz, but what about second hand, bit concerned about costs and being ripped off. Can anyone offer any advice, or even better, want to come with me to car hunt when I get there :D
