Default Adelaide...what's it like living there?

Hi,

Regulars on here will know about the despair that has sometimes engulfed this family when it comes to leaving the dark shores of the UK.

That said a little light has emerged at the end of the tunnel in that, even though I am 45 I could still, thanks to qualifications and experience, be eligible for an RSMS visa should I find the right employer.

The most likely place that my IT skills would find a place of work in these circumstances would be in Adelaide.

We've seen the DVDs etc issued by the SA authorities but could anyone please take the time to let us know about what it is actually like to live there?

Many thanks

Steve & Lynn

There are stacks of threads about Adelaide on here just have a search through them all.

Adelaide folk will all be tucked up in bed right now, you will have some activity later i reckon.

One great source of knowledge is Wendy.......also check out Adelaidebrits ( forum ) and also adelaide bound this place has got some very useful info on it.

I'm awake (just )

It's really hard to put into words what it's like living here. I guess it's no different to living anywhere else really except it's just a pleasure to wake up every day.

Most of the people are really friendly, and will talk to you for hours if you let them.

The housing prices aren't all that crazy here, yet - although they are going up pretty fast. There was an average growth of 20% last year.

There's always something to do, or somewhere to go if you want to. There's the hills, the beach, the Barossa and Clare Valley all not too far away. Lots of festivals held here, wildlife parks, Kangaroo Island etc etc etc.

It's a beautiful place to be

I'm sat here with my cup of tea, listening to the birds in my garden. Apart from them there's not a sound. The sun is just coming up and it's going to be about 33 degrees today - so it's just perfect.

Is it April when you get here?

Steve/Lynn

We moved to the Adelaide area in September 2007.

It's not exactly a hotbed for IT work though. The majority of international/national companies have their IT depts in Sydney or Melbourne, it seems. Adelaide's not the first place I'd choose to look for IT work, but it's a reasonably big city so there are IT jobs out there.

As Wendy said, house prices are still pretty reasonable when compared with other large cities here.

Adelaide's got everything we need, for now at any rate.

I've been in Adelaide for 17 years and it has got a lot better in that time. The weather's not too bad year round. I can't stand the 40 degree days but they are few and far between. Spring and Autumn are beautiful weather wise and Winter can be chily during the day and very cold at night. It barely rains here at times so it's very dry and dusty as a result. One of the best things is waking up to the sunshine, can't beat it IMHO.
Travelling around Adelaide is very good time wise and traffic conjestion not too bad even at peak times.
It's very much a cafe culture in Adelaide and there's usually plenty of outdoor fairs etc. It's an outdoorsy lifestyle thanks to the weather so even if you're just in the backyard at least you're not trapped indoors by the rain.
Very sport oriented too for both adults and children but esp for children.
It's not a fashion hub and you'll see all sorts on your travels out and about but this isn't necessarily a bad thing IMHO. Relaxed is how I would describe most things in Adelaide, you can keep up with the Jones' or not and it doesn't matter a jot.
I hope that gives a wee glimpse into life in Adelaide.

What's the sport opportunities for kids there? My son loves swimming and league and plays this regulary at school. He's also a bit of a drama queen and I wanted to get him into classes.

Cheers

My step daughters school have a few sports on offer but not Swimming or league so I can't answer specifically. They play Touch, Netball & Cricket. I can have a look in the local yellow pages for you for the drama & swimming.

Morning

Hmmm...........Adelaide?????

She is a lot of things to a lot of people.

Certainly quieter than the other major Oz cities. Not quite the "Hick" town that some make out but it feels comfortable to us.
It is called the "20 minute city" as from the center everything is - beach, hills major suburbs.

The metropolitan area is stretching out though with population increase and a drive from South to North is way over an hour now.

Many different style and prices so there should be something for everyone, depending on budget.

Adelaide does "grow" on many people.

We've been here nearly 8 years and it does feel like home now - even in the darkest hours.

Temperature extremes are "Fun" - winter can be very cold here (don't believe the brochures) and summer incredibly hot.

Only you can make the decision really

There are a few other swimming centres but are in specific areas. If you know where you'll be then I'll look around that area for you.

Glasgowlass you're a star. Really appreciate the help. Kinda kicking myself. There was a couple of jobs that I spotted on Sunday but the closing date was yesterday. Didn't think I could get the guff ready in time. Wish I had just gone for it.

Cheers
