ADELAIDE OR PERTH - IT JOBS/PERFORMING ARTS
I'm in the middle of applying for sponsorship to Adelaide but if hubby passes his IELTS, which he took on the 1st Dec, we could go to any region. I've got a cousin who lives in Reynella, Adelaide, but i've also got good friends in Perth.......both think their region is the best, i'm so confused, I started to look at Brisbane and got even more confused, so we've narrowed it down to Adelaide or Perth. Never having been there it's difficult to decide. My perfect place would be near a good high school, not too far away from the beach, close to shops, leisure and recreational stuff and within commuting distance to the main commercial IT area - hubby is a c# computer programmer. My eldest daughter is heavily into performing arts, wants to study it in college, so i need to find a school/college that specialises in performing arts. I've found a uni in Perth, Edith Cowen, (i think it's called) that seems to fit the bill, but nothing in Adelaide - Does anyone know of anywhere that might be suitable? I've asked my cousin but she's not into performing arts so she's not sure. I've read loads on here about Perth as a region, people either love it or hate it, but i've not found many bad opinions on Adelaide - Is it because most people migrate to Perth or is it because there's nothing to dislike about Adelaide? I don't want to start a war between Perth and Adelaide but your opinions would be very well received

I think if you're looking at IT jobs for your husband, then Adelaide is not the place to be. Take a look at www.seek.com.au or www.careerone.com.au for jobs that your husband will be suited for in all the cities that interest you. It would be a shame to go to Adelaide just because your relative says it's the best place and then your husband isn't able to find suitable work. It would also be a shame to go to Perth and same thing happens.
I have lived in both Adelaide and Perth and love both. Adelaide is small and friendly and much more affordable but Perth is really a beautiful city on the beautiful Indian Ocean. For asthetics, I would choose Perth. For the people I left behind and access to things/places I would choose Adelaide. Bear in mind that from Perth it's at least a 4 hour flight to the nearest major city (Adelaide) but from Adelaide it's only 50 minutes flight to Melbourne, 1.5 hours to Sydney, only a couple of hours to Brisbane or Gold Coast, 5 hours to NZ, etc.
Really, it's going to boil down to what your family's needs are. For us it was a job for my old man, and that meant we had to move to Perth. Do some research, and if you are able to get a visa that does not require state sponsorship then apply for that one. If things don't work out for you in whatever city you go to on an independent visa you can move interstate if you like.

Performing Arts
My daughter was studying in Stratford on Avon on a fulltime 3 year course.
I struggled to find a course here however - the entertainment factory provided something we thought was similar so she enrolled there.
It was more dance orientated though and not cheap and as dance wasn't her thing she has moved on from it into working instead with a view to taking part in local theatre instead.
Shes 17 now with a driving licence/car/job and much happier than she was studying Per Arts - despite it being a centre to her life for the last 5 years even claiming that if i couldn't find her a course she was going to stay in uk and finish hers.
Funny how things change

Re: ADELAIDE OR PERTH - IT JOBS/PERFORMING ARTS
Thanks for the replies. We've looked at a few recruitment websites for both regions and found jobs that my hubby could do, which we know he would have to compete with the locals for in any event. The computer language he does is on the skilled list, he gets 60 points plus an extra 15 for experience etc. and it's also on both the Perth and Adelaide priorty sponsorship list, so we were hoping that he would be ok.
It is a major concern, ending up in Australia with no job doesn't sound very appealing, especially when we've both got good jobs here.
We'll be doing lots more research before we decide on anything. The main reason we're trying for the state sponsorship visa (176) rather than the 175 visa is because they class the 176 as priority and we should get it granted quicker. My eldest daughter is 16 in May and we want her to start school in Australia before the new year starts in January 2008 - Is this a good enough reason to opt for a restrictive visa, i ask myself? To be honest, i think i've lost the plot on this one, anyone got any ideas or opinions?
Thanks for the info on performing arts, i've got a feeling you can empathise with me on this one

My hubby got in on his C# skills, took 3 months once the skills where assessed. I really think you should go for the full visa, if you can get it. You will feel better knowing you have all the options.
good luck.
good luck.

Was that 3 months to get the 175 Visa, Emelems? We can't make our minds up between Adelaide and Perth, i think you may both be right about forgetting the sponsorship visa, providing hubby passes IELTS of course

With good C# skills he will have no problems finding work in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra or Hobart

I reckon you need to consider how much you have to spend on a house too.
Median Perth established house price is $506,000
Median Adelaide established house price is $386,000

This house on just under 500 squares in northern Perth is $510-530k

This one in Adelaide has one more bedroom and over 200 more square meters on the block, with sea views for "offers over 500k":

Yes, but the house in SA is a 2 hour drive from the city. It's actually south of Victor Harbour, which is not a reasonable comparison. Seaford to Adelaide is about the same commute as Burns Beach. Blackwood would be more comparable to Tapping, I would think.

Re: ADELAIDE OR PERTH - IT JOBS/PERFORMING ARTS
Fair enough. Are you able to find one in Adelaide about the same distance as Tapping for comparison? I don't know much about Adeliaide's geography.

She's going to be looking in the Brighton area (because of the school) so this is what they'd get for $500k ish http://www.domain.com.au/Public/Prop...did=2006671026#
(athough it hasn't been built yet ) So really not much in it
There are lots of nice area's in SA, but I don't know any with a school that do performing arts other than Brighton
