Families of teens face big struggle to pay bills
By FLEUR ANDERSON in Canberra

ADELAIDE parents face mounting financial stress as their children grow but are still better off than families in most states, according to an analysis of family spending.

Macquarie University academic Paul Henman and the Australian Council of Social Service found raising a six-year-old child in Adelaide cost about $106.80 a week, including housing, electricity, food, clothing, household goods, health, transport, leisure and personal care.

That is almost 8 per cent less than Sydney, the most expensive city to raise children.

Adelaide parents have the nation's cheapest food and health bills but pay the most for leisure activities.
