Adelaide or Brisbane ????
Thought it was about time to join the forum as we are looking at moving over next year - the question is though Adelaide or Brisbane (Sunshine Coast)? We are a family with 4 girls aged 17, 13, 5 and 3 - with our eldest looking to train as a florist. We are going on a skilled work visa, as Kev is a carpenter and me well I am just a lady of leisure ( I wish) Kev has always worked for himself and is looking to hopefully get into some sort of property developing. We are hopefully looking at coming over with a budget between 1.3 and 1.6 million dollars. We would like to be in walking distance to schools, a few shops, cafes with a beach being a bonus but not essential - we would be really grateful to hear from people who have made the move and to share their thoughts and views on both areas as it is a decision which we are finding extremely hard to make. We are looking at maybe coming out to look around early next year.
Thanks for taking the time to read our email and we look forward to hearing from you. Kev, Carol & Girls |

Hi FluffyTheCampfireSlayer,
Many thanks for your reply and the welcome to BE. :) We are not worried at all about moving to OZ - we just wanted some feedback from members with their views on Adelaide and Brisbane, as we are finding it hard to make a decision on where to live. All the best, Kev & Carol |
Re: Adelaide or Brisbane ????
The weather is probably the biggest difference between the two cities.
Brisbane is sub tropical with only 2 seasons - warm and hot. Adelaide has 4 seasons. It can get very hot in summer, but the humidity is not as bad as Qld. Brisbane is experiencing a population boom at the moment. Both cities are backward, but Adelaide probably slightly more so. If I had to choose - I would go to Melbourne. |
Re: Adelaide or Brisbane ????
With 1.6 million you can buy Adelaide :p

Backward - BACKWARD?? how very dare you lol !! I could wholeheartedly recommend Brisbane - we've got the climate, the city is rapidly growing and improving all the time - the lifestyle is here!! But of course the choice is yours - I'm biased now that I live in Brissy of course - but I feel that i've made the right decision. |

Kev, Carol & Girls Property development? as in UK, doing up a house = property development or as in australia land is very expensive and in severe shortage close to cities, you would need slightly more than a million bucks. You sound like you could afford the airfares to both places why not visit both, preferably in summer when both places are going right off weather wise, off as in worse time of year, if you can handle then you can probably handle the rest of the year. I personally would not move to adelaide with teenage kids tho, you would have to see if they liked it. |
Re: Adelaide or Brisbane ????
My vote would obviously be for Brisbane....but given that I've never even been to Adelaide, why would you listen to me?
If I were in your position, I'd spend a week or two in both Brisbane and Adelaide before making up your mind... it'll be money well spent IMO. (and spend the day in Melbourne and go to St. Kilda's beach, to keep 007 happy!) |

Melb doesn't keep winning the number 1 all round best place in the world to live for nothing FWIW Depending on who's study you read Brisbane usualy comes above Melbourne, Sydney and Australia.... and always in top 8 globally... |
Re: Adelaide or Brisbane ????
not made the move yet, but have just come back from visiting both places ... and it really is down to how you feel about the place - if you can afford a recce then do it - only when you get to the places and drive around them will you get a proper feel for them and be able to decide whether you could live there. Adelaide and Bris are vast places .... and each area can vary wildly ... depends what you want out of it.
practical stuff like house prices have already been mentioned, so good luck with it  sue :D |
