Adelaide

Hi, this is my first thread so sorry if this has been discussed else where.
My family and I are looking to make the move from the UK, we have seaked advice reagarding visas are have been told this wouldn't be an issue, we have now been looking into which area to move to, we like the idea of Adelaide but would like to know what people think the area.
We would likes to be in an area that is close to the beach but not hours away from a city, due to work.
We have young children so need to be close to schools and obviously safety is important.
Any advice on Adelaide would be great or any other experiences on other areas that people have lived.
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

Adelaide is quite quiet with a good variety in terms of areas to live - city, beach, hills, etc. I like it lol.

Even though you have been told not to worry about the visa, I would make sure of this first before making any big plans. Don't know who told you, but if you are not Australian, and are thinking of skilled migration, do you have a skill in demand? Can you reach the points total needed to get a visa? Do you have the money to afford a move and possibly be without work for an extended period? Have a look at the DIBP site for info on visas

189 visa here - Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) - with points test and estimate of visa cost

CSOL - Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List - occupation must be in on this list to qualify for skilled migration, and depending on if it is SOL or CSOL only, you may need sponsorship.

Thanks for the response, I am an electrical engineer and have seaked advice from companies and authorities regarding a visa.

Although we have equity in our houses to buy we would still need to work and will be going to a working expo in September regarding this.

Just need to make sure Adelaide is the area for us.

Thank you for your reply

Electrical engineers would be assessed by Engineers Australia - Migration Skills Assessment | Engineers Australia

There is work here - manufacturing, mining, projects, etc. but hiring processes can be very slow. The expo will only give you names of companies who may be hiring - google can probably give you that - and not necessarily in SA. NT hae been trying to recruit a lot of people. What areas is your experience in?

Hello Ad,

i am currently living in Adelaide, i moved here 12 months ago from Sydney, i was in NSW for 8 months, and before that i was living in Kent, working in london,

I am a project manger for a Fire company, although without the family, we are similar,

Personally i think Adelaide is very quiet, although if you want hustle and bustle i guess you can head into the city for that! however it is nothing like London, more like a big country town, Glenelg/Henley Beach/Brighton are nice spots to settle,

It can get very hot during the summer and pretty cold during the winter, for example it is currently 4 degrees, and in the summer it reached 46 degrees! -however it is a dry heat unlike QLD/NSW,

as a Spark you would need to prove your capabilities, and transfer your accreditation to the equivalent Australian qualification in order to work,

there is a fair amount of building work going on in Adelaide at the moment, what sort of field are you in?

i too went to one of the expo's and to be honest didn't find it that helpful, in the end i arranged a working holiday visa and a transfer with my current company to their sister company out here, they then put me on a 457 visa once my working holiday visa was coming to an end,

with out any dependants and being under 30, it wasn't too much of an issue for me getting a visa, but its not always as simple as that!

hope that helps,
tim

I to work in London and until a couple of years ago when my daughter was born we lived there Australia was something we had spoke about prior to her birth.
Tim thanks for your advise regarding the expo, I have emailed a few companies to see if my qualifications are transferable, it's nice to get advise from people who have done what we are hoping to do. Thanks

Glad I was of some use. We moved over to Adelaide a little over 12 months ago coming from Slough, but my background is industrial maintenance electrical and controls.

Good luck with the plans.

It is a tough decision, but I think you are focusing on the wrong criteria, you need to focus on things that will really separate one place from another.

In the UK, if you were by the beach, no you probably will not be anywhere near a city, but if you look at a map of Australia, you will see that the cities are around the edge (most of them). So being near a city and beach is not very hard to achieve here and as I say, does not really narrow the search down too much.

Also there are children in every part of Australia, so again you will find schools everywhere (unless you landed in the middle of the outback) and you are not going to find one city safer than any other, so again, you are not separating the choices.

Things that really do differentiate between locations include; availability of work, housing costs and climate. I honestly believe that most people are better off focusing on those types of things when trying to decide where in Australia to settle. It will clarify the options much more than focusing on things like "schools" and "safety". If I had to pick one factor to define this decisions it would be availability if work. Look into that, everything else can follow.
