Default activate a Bank account while on reccie?

Hi folks,
The wife and me are off for a reccie in Northern Queensland mid-March and will try to get as much achieved as possible ( we go for good late September). Has anyone tried to activate a bank account without a permanent Oz address? We have applied to Westpac and ANZ, both have branches in our fist port of call. We would greatly appreciate your advice/experiences.

If your in the Townsville, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Mackay areas and have any recommendations of great places to live please chip in.

Many thanks Kev and Julie

Hi Kev dont know about Queensland but i guess its the same,if you have friends here, use their address or even your rental address,we are with westpac, once we had activated the account we did all the statements online so it didn't really matter what address you used...this is also a good time to do you TFN as well..

Hi there

We opened an account with St George when we were staying with friends in Manly years ago. Wasn't a problem - just took our passports in and it was all registered to our UK address.

In that time they've contacted us everytime the accounts changed - i.e. they will decide you have to have a min of say $1k in the account to avoid charges and we've even changed accounts over the phone to get a better deal. We've had to phone them a lot recently as one of our transfers went missing for a fortnight (argghh) so we do it on Skype and I have to say they were so helpful and friendly.

The other way to do it is to open a Commonweath bank account at their UK branch and deposit money here - I think the only downside of that is that you can't get to the money until you get to Oz.

Hope this helps.

We also opened with St George and they have been brilliant. Would highly recommend them and they seem to have branches everywhere. Sorry its not answering your question directly, but it helps to have recommendations to help make your decision of who to go with. We haven't had any bank charges with them either and opening was easy too!

Good luck with your reccie!
