Accomodation in Cairns and Port Douglas

Hi Everyone,

I'm off to Brisbane in June and we want to fly up to Cairns and spend a week maybe in Palm Cove or Cairns and then drive up to Port Douglas. Does anyone have any recomendations for accommodation or maybe other places worth visiting. All the info available makes it different to decide so all opinions very welcome!! :D

BK,

We stayed at Rydges Reef Resort in Port Douglas when we were up there for a week at Xmas. Very happy with the resort & the service etc, we had a 2 bedroom villa, the kids spent most of the time in the pool & at the kids club & all in all it was pleasant experience.

Someone else off the board has also stayed there (Swifts? but I could be wrong) & they also had positive comments about it.

I did a thread about it when we got back, should be able to find it with a search.

Don't know your personal circumstances (ie just yourself?, young kids?, budget? etc) so don't know what you're after.

In Feb we stayed firstly here at Trinity Beach (inbetween Cairns and Palm Cove). We booked them thru' needitnow.com.au or wotif.com.au.

Then we stayed here in Cairns (in the hotel part - not a dorm in the hostel). We had to book direct with them.

Both were very new (in both cases I got the feeling we were almost the first in each room) and very quiet, but they said their season didn't pick up until May.

Thanks, It'll just be me and my boyfriend, I'm open to any suggestions. Some suggestions on different options would be great. I stayed in Palm Cove last Christmas and that was lovely.

Thanks for the links MrsDagboy :)

Thanks young lad I'll check them out, personal experiences are always better than guide books! :)

It does, doesn't it! Jim hits a big milestone in June so I'm taking him out to the Great Barrier reef on the actual day. Our 10 year old is coming too, so not quite a romantic holiday for us, but I'm really looking forward to it. Roll on June!

I noticed they have a hotel in Port Douglas too, we went to the Barrier Reef last time we were in Port Douglas we opted for a smaller boat rather than one of the larger Quiksilver tours and it was great.

No wonder you can't wait, hope you have a lovely time :D

I've booked a Sunlover cruise because I'm a wimp who likes to stay dry, it'll be Joseph's first time snorkelling and Jim will be able to go scuba diving. Sunlover cater for all of us on the one trip.:D

Hope you have a lovely time too.

Jane :)

Have stayed at the hotel below - right on the beach at Port Douglas and highly recommended. We had an apartment with kitchen and a lovely jacuzzi !!!

Port Douglas has many happy memories for us. When we were back packing 15 years ago, this was the place we run out of money and had to stay and find jobs. We ended up getting engaged in Port Douglas. So to the point, we went back a couple of years back with the kids and stayed in The Mango Tree Appts which are very good and well priced.

Must Do's:

We went out to the reef twice on Hubba which the kids loved, its so much nicer than the big Quicksilver trips.

Mossman gorge is great and lovely to swim & play, very pretty.

Walk along the beach and sneak into the Sheraton, the pools are stunning. You can blag it and spend the day, even use there towels.

Take a walk along 4 mile beach about 6.30 - 7am it's beautiful!!

Croc spotting on the Daintree

If all goes well we will hope to move to the Sunshine coast by November but have promised ourselves we will spend new year in Port Douglas. WE LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:) ;) :p
