Default 8 year long(winded!) dream of WA..and still trying to get in!

Hi!

Would love some motivational advice!!.. Honestly, since my brother migrated to WA 8 years ago, I have been trying to follow him over there. I looked through the SOL and chose EFL teaching. I started from scratch, went to college, then onto Uni and then I did an intensive CELTA course and off overseas I went to get my 12 months teaching experience.. on returning to UK and commencing my application I was horrified to see that the EFL teaching occupation had been removed!. I was advised that I should retrain as a Primary or Secondary teacher and with my previous experience that should be enough..so

I applied to do a PGCE, I completed that and went off to apply for AUS again..but no previous experience was no good!.. they wanted 12 months post grad teaching experience.. so there I was.. desperately trying to get my 12 months teaching experience in any school in the South West of the UK, but couldnt get accepted into the over saturated Primary sector.
I went overseas teaching EFL again to figure out what to do!...

I am now on vacation in New Zealand and thought..heck..maybe I will get my experience here..Easy apparently-according to friends who have done it.....On NO It Isnt!! thats a whole other kettle of fish! Primary school teachers from overseas have a very hard time securing work here and its almost impossible to get a work visa...gerrreat!.(although I am able to accept Secondary should I be offered.. so SOME good news!)

So what next???? it just seems to go on and on forever!... Should I go for secondary here? or go overseas..Dubai, Oman, Singapore..(although I am worried sick that in the next 12 months the country I do end up going to will be on a hot list of no go areas for my application for PR!!!)...

I know this is a long winded thread..but my whole process has been the same!. Has anyone else had to go through the same sort of thing??
I feel I am at the last hurdle and havent the energy to make it to the finishing post! I just need this 12 months teaching experience!!!!
I love it in WA so much that I will not back down and will continue to do everything in my power to get there ....(I have already lost 5 points for age..am not many years off of the next level where I will lose 5 more!!!)

Well, if anyone deserved it....!

Why not write to NOOSR and ask them the conditions of experience? e.g which countries will they accept or does it have to be your 'home' coutry.

One other thing - what about biting the bullet and heading to London to do Primary for 12 months? OK it might be tough but the year will fly - and you should get work easily.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply!!
Good idea about writing to NOOSR, I will certainly try that!
As for London, unfortunatley, I just cant afford to go back there. A flight is ok but costs of living and deposits etc... impossible. but I will certainly find out about where I can go.
Cheers again.. and yes ! I do feel like I deserve it too. these people who complain after getting their PR so easily really dont know how lucky they are to have the choice!
I wont give up!

Thanks for the reply.
No, it's just me! Single woman ( I was under 30 when I started all of this). I thought and my family thought I wouldnt have any problem getting into WA. Its just such a headache. I would be very happy to do the 2 years in hard to staff schools to get into AU, but I need the 12 months before I can even apply for that! (unless you know differently?)
But like your friends hubby, I found it hard to get anything permanent in UK. I had to go overseas to get work as an EFL teacher but that doesnt count in the eyes of NOOSR. I couldnt get work in the UK either and my supply was very little and also didnt count. I am hoping that something comes up here in NZ soon or else I will have to take a Primary post overseas, Which isnt where I want to be.
Crazy that the entire world other than AUS the UK or NZ will accept my years of training and experience and pay fantastic salaries...but that isnt what I want!!. Its also not fair on any job I do accept, because once the year is done, I will be applying for AUS.

Fingers crossed something comes up soon!

You could try the private schools, or you could get government sponsor in designated areas. i am just thinking of everything, remembering how we got here.
we had 3 visas turned down, got sponsord bt gov. for Melbourne, but i wanted Wa . i rang immi at Perth, and they asked why we could not go south west, well i had not heard of south west. Got in touch with a wonderful lady, who i am meeting for luch today. and we was here 2 months later, the beautiful Bunbury. Manjimup is about 1 and half hours away. My hubby got job sponsor, i rang all gas and plumbing com. in South west.
Hope this helps, you will get here, Denise

Bunbury! wow. My brother and his family love it there, they are in Mandurah south of Freemantle. I will try the private schools! Good thinking. Is the South west classed as an area hard to staff then? Is there someone you could suggest I can speak with or email in Perth immigration? I feel my emails are falling on deaf ears when I send them and when I call the immigration line its all automated..I know that the government of WA have said they DONT sponsor teachers so that is no good unfortunately!
My brother is willing to sponsor me but I need this darned 6-12 months teaching experience!.. hey ho.. it will happen I am sure!
Denise, thank you for your time! I really hope I can be in WA in the very near future! and I would certainly take you for lunch too to say thank you for the support!. Its so nice to hear positive advice after so much negative stuff!

Hi Trixabelle,

I too have had numerous problems with teaching in Australia. Just to clarify, do you hold UK QTS and have you completed your foundation (NQT) year teaching in the UK? If so, that should be one years experience right there.

If not, then you really ought to look at getting a place to do it in as you may not secure a positive skills assessment without it. Remember that the NQT year is really a part of the training process that validates your QTS, and NOOSR do request your QTS and Induction certificates. Remember also that you only have 5 years to complete it after you gain QTS.
Also, the basic conditions for applying for a visa require you to have been in skilled employment for 12 of the last 18 months, so if EFL teaching isn't on the SOL, then you wouldn't fulfill this criterion.

How about coming up north to get your 12 months teaching? I live in Leicester (which is barely north) and there are schools that are really struggling to recruit teachers here, both primary and secondary. If I remember correctly, then your teaching experience must be in the methodology that you trained in, so working in secondary may not be an option. I may be wrong, so someone corrrect me if I am.

Also the rent and other costs of living are much cheaper here than that London. Derby and Nottingham are also teacher recruitment hotspots. Leicestershire has an agreement with the GTC that allows you to do your whole NQT year through supply teaching as they are that desperate. Not sure if any other counties have this agreement, but it may be worth finding out. Also, I'm not sure how supply teaching counts as work experience in gaining a visa, so you may have to find that out too.

The teacher training and registration systems are very different between Australia and the UK, and there is little flexibility at the Oz end, so I really think that you need to do what in their eyes qualifies you to teach. Being a qualified teacher in the UK doesn't necessarily mean that you will be accepted with open arms as a qualified teacher in Oz. Get the NOOSR documentation and find out EXACTLY what they want, then do that, as anything else may lead to additional delays and loss of points!

Hi Thank you for the reply, it's nice to know that there are genuinely lovely people out there who want to help out!

I havent completed my NQT and was informed by the GTC that the NQT only needs to be completed if I dont wish to teach in the UK, they said I do have my QTS and wouldnt need to retrain etc if I were to return to the UK after 5 years. They also said that the 5 year stipulation was a guideline and that they only advise people to do it in that time.

I will contact NOOSR again and ask them about the induction year though. I havent heard of them asking for Induction Certificates. It was so hard to get work in the UK which is why I left to work overseas. I actually didnt have any spare funds to move away from the South West and wasnt in a financial situation to ask the bank for help (they seemed to be very very generous when I was studying, but soon withdrew any offer of assistance once I finished my course.!-dont you just love banks!). I hope to God that they dont request Induction Certificates as I will have to get a job overseas to pay for me to go back to the UK (ICK ) so that would mean another TWO years before I can even apply.! Only have myself to blame this time though as I should have checked with NOOSR prior to leaving the UK.

Also, the basic conditions for applying for a visa require you to have been in skilled employment for 12 of the last 18 months, so if EFL teaching isn't on the SOL, then you wouldn't fulfill this criterion.
That was my first :scared: experience! when I returned from my 12 months overseas (which I now need a police clearance check for!!!), the SOL list had been modified and the EFL teaching had been removed!!!!!!!! so yeah I knew that situation a few years ago!!!!!!!...

In the Uk its not possible for a Primary trained teacher to teach Secondary, but it is vice versa ( I believe)... I would be looking for Primary.

ANyway, I will let you know what happens. And if I do have to go back to the UK I will look into Leicester etc. (always like the people up north! Very friendly!)..

Thank you once again

So I am unfortunately stuck overseas until I can get either my years teaching experience here, or a job offer abroad that pays.

Being a qualified teacher in the UK doesn't necessarily mean that you will be accepted with open arms as a qualified teacher in Oz. Get the NOOSR documentation and find out EXACTLY what they want, then do that, as anything else may lead to additional delays and loss of points!
