It depends on how much disposable income the OP wants....by sharing then he would share all expenses including utilities, by renting a studio on his own then he will have higher rent and ALL the utilities to pay plus the rental deposit etc etc.

Secondly, I'm guessing you're looking at a 457 visa? As I'm sure you're aware, that's only a temp visa. The job disappears, you have 28 days in which to find another or you're back to Blighty. Plenty use that route and it completely depends on what level of risk you're happy with as to whether it's the route for you. We opted for a PR visa.

What is your specialisation? Digital Advertising is very broad. If you don't have a degree you will need to do a skills assessment.

I've lived in Sydney for over a year. I'm a year 2 nurse and earn around 60k before tax Plus weekend rates etc so probably around the same. I pay $300 a week rent to live in the eastern suburbs sharing with 1 person. I never worked as a nurse in Scotland but find I have plenty of extra cash to save or do things on days off etc. I think it's easy to live here being single and sharing, Sydney is very expensive for rent and sharing definitely helps if you want a nice enough place in a good area.

I'm considering a move to Australia.
What sort of lifestyle can I expect on 60k to 65k a year? Would I have to be extremely careful each month with money? Would I be scrimping and saving whenever I can? Part of my desire to move to Australia, is to be able to travel around to different cities and do all the usual traveller things as well on annual leave. Is that possible on this salary?

Sydney is by far the most expensive for rental accommodation, and you'll want to live in the inner west or eastern suburbs to enjoy life to the max. Budget $500 a week for a small flat, or consider sharing. If you're single, you should manage to enjoy your stay on that money. My only concern would be how much time you'll have - people in corporate life in Sydney work long hours.

Hey Andy1987,
I moved out here almost 4 years ago on a 417, then got sponsored so I've been on a 457 since.
When I came out here a friend said I would need $100K (as a single person) to live comfortably. I thought he was mental! I'm not a big fashion shopping person, I rarely drink, no expensive hobbies etc. Some things that used to cost me GBP100 in London, cost AUD1000.. no joke! (i.e. dentistry, car repairs)
After a few years in, I can safely say he's right.. Perhaps aim for $80K + super as a start and see how you track. If a company is sponsoring you out of the UK, you should get at least 4-6 weeks short let apartment rental as part of your package (if not, request it).
Hope that's useful & good luck!

This is highly unlikely to work.
When you come on a 417 you have come to Australia on holiday. You should know this and your prospective employer does to. You are in effect ineligible for any full time role on that visa and will be on the bottom of the CV pile for any such roles.
There's a real danger in coming on a 417 as a means of emigration that you cannot get work in your chosen field, have to do something else casual, and your skills degrade or become less current as time goes on.
It might be a quick way in but it's a lazy one too.

It's a really common way for people to come out, interview & choose a company, try it out and the company can effectively "road test" an employee without committing the funds to sponsorship yet. I'd say that 70% of my friends came to Australia this way from professional careers elsewhere in the world.

Hmm, I disagree. I came out here on a 417 and started a permanent role whilst on it, with the knowledge they would need to sponsor me after 5-6 mths.

I should add that I build technology teams for high growth start-ups, so I have a pretty good insight into hiring practices here in Sydney.
Perspective is the thing and everyone is entitled to an opinion. So, lets just agree to disagree bcworld

To be fair, the first person to express any disagreement with anyone else's opinion on this thread was you, post #23. ("Hmm. I disagree") ...

I was simply ending my email is a non-combative manner.. as it seems (merely from observation) that differences of opinion are often fiercely disputed on the forum... Simply ensuring everything is kept is good spirits!
