What does this mean?

I have just gone to change something on my profile and noticed that people have written some nice things about me (reputation?) and awarded me 585 points.

I am a bit confused...

But strangely pleased.

Please explain.

In brief, you have just discovered who has been sending you karma! This is reflected in the blue boxes under your name. Do a search on karma for an explanation. And in the meantime, get sharing it! :D

OMG - have just realised that i have probably been rude to all those people that have helped me all this time - I never realized about this whole Karma thing!
