489 and school fees
Hello everyone,
Hope you can help with this one.
Our friends have just moved over to Qld from the UK, on a 489 visa.
They went to sort out schooling for their 15 year old son at one of the catholic schools in their new area and were told that he was classed as as international student. They were advised that they would have to pay $20000 a year instead of $3000 as their class of visa is temporary.
Is this correct re: international student fee.
What would happen if he wanted to enrol at a state school - are fees applicable then?
Cheers
Jo

Yes I think it is correct, although they might want to point out that it is a provisional visa not a temporary one. It is a bit different... but I do think that is probably correct nevertheless.
If they went to a state school, at the moment Qld is not charging, although that could change at any time. WA recently started to charge for temporary residents. It would be a lot less though.
