Default 475ers in Oz - your experiences?

Dear all,

In a month's time I have to make the decision on leaving my job in the UK.

Having a small bout of panic, so wanted to ask the 475ers in Oz - what has been your experience of getting jobs and how do employers look on this type of visa?

I think this the new version of the old 496, if it is basically a skilled provisional sponsored visa.

I've not had any problem getting a job, nor has my OH, the question has not really come up.

When I apply I refer to my visa as "residential" and if they like you at interview, it's not usually a deal breaker after that.

Only issue would be if you wanted to do military, and get security clearance, then they don't like temp visa's.

Good luck!!

Only you can know what is the right decision for you, but I thought I'd tell you about my experience.

I came on a 495 visa (the old Skilled Independent Regional visa and predecessor of the 475) and found no problem in getting a job (and I was upfront that it was a 3 year visa), but salaries in Oz are generally lower than the UK and in the regional areas where the 475 visa allows you to live and work, the salaries are lower still so just make sure you are realistic when you are budgeting. My OH has quite specialist skills and could not find work easily in the area we moved to, which also knocked a hole in our budget, but we survived the two years and got PR earlier this year so it was worth it.

Other than this, we did not really have any difficulties as a result of the visa type.

If you want to read about some of the problems people have had, run a search on 887 in the immigration forum. But having said that, there are lots of people who have got PR and are now very happy with their decision to come on the 495 visa.

These threads might be useful if you have not already looked at them, but there are lots of others too:

All the best with your decision.
