457IE and UK Driving Licence

Do I have to surrender my UK driving licence within 3 months even though we are only on a temp business visa or do we retain it until we have PR?

Cheers guys

Hi there,

From memory when my mum and i emigrated here in 93, she came here with here GB licence and was allowed to drive for 12mths on a temporary international licence(which she got in GB) until she was required to get an OZ Licence, that was Victoria, it may be difference for each state?

here is a starting point for you

http://www.vicroads.com.au they may have more info for licence requirements

Good Luck

In WA it's 12 months. I came over on that visa and left it right till the last minute before changing my license.

Comes in handy if you get any speeding tickets as you can put down your UK driving license and not get any points! ;)

The way I understand it is that if you're on a temporary visa
you can keep driving around on your UK licence, but that
might only be for Queensland as that's where we're headed.

Also for Queensland, if you are coming on a PR visa, you have to take a test within 3 months, but if you already have a UK licence
you only to take the theory test anyway. Which I was really glad about!!!

hope this helps Karen.

Thanks for the advice. We are in SA if that helps. Its funny but the matter has come up due to receiving a speeding fine and was concerned that if they asked for my driving licence and I only had the UK one and should have applied for an Aussie one that I would be in bother. The Transport SA website mentions 3months within arriving but for permanent residents. I will assume that I can hold off for a while.

Thanks

i think it depends on how long you are temp for. we are on a 4 year temp nsw. we were advised to sit the test. i did it today at the tra office. took about 15 mins dead easy. cost me $32 for test and $95 for a 3 year licence.
sort it now or its just one more thing u will need before your pr.
