Default 457 health insurance and medicare levy surcharge?

Does anyone know if overseas visitor cover on the 457 visa exempts you from paying the extra 1% medicare levy surcharge?

I know we are still going to have to pay 1.5% medicare levy, but all the health insurers are telling me different e.g HBA says their policies dont exempt you from the MLS, but IMAN say theirs do (though nothing about it on their website). Just wondering if anyone knows anything about it? Feel like the whole healthcare set up for temp. residents is a money-taking exercise. We could end up paying $4800 on health ins policy, then an extra 2.5% of salary for Medicare too. Its a joke!!!

Some 457 holders are not eligible for Medicare - get a letter confirming this, and you can be exempt the whole Medicare levy.

for an individual 457 visa holder you pay with medibank about $155/month private health cover.

Before you do your tax return, you apply for an exemption http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/...ses_011005.pdf

however it depends which country you are from (see link).

Am from the UK so we know we are going to have to pay the Medicare charge of 1.5% and not eligible for an exemption. Just trying to work out if we will be exempt from the extra surcharge if we earn over $100k, as none of the health insurers giving me a clear answer on this one.

Well the ATO will as you claim and give your details on the tax return about your private Health Fund. They then decide if you are exempt or not from the surcharge. I was on a 457 with my company provided medical and was exempt.

Cheers
