Yes, but some employers (especially for better jobs) won't hire someone on temporary status.

I have never found this to be the case, they are more likely to be concerned about the amount of time left on your visa rather the fact that it is a 457.

If you have a four year visa then very few companies would expect you to still be working for them after that length of time anyway.

NSW is going to cost you $4500 per child up front so be sure to budget for that.

Or $5500 if the child will be in Year 11 or Year 12.

Plus the administration charge.

On the positive side, if you get a permanent residence visa part way through the year the fees are refunded on a pro rata basis.

I'm just hoping the PR visa comes through before EldestChild starts Uni :(

Its typical, before we came out to Australia, OH had interviews with two divisions of the same company - one based in Sydney, one based in Brisbane. If we'd gone with the Sydney one, they would have paid the kids' school fees. We ended up in Brisbane, so the situation didn't arise.

OH then changes job and we move to Sydney... are the new company interested in paying the fees? Nah. Thank God we only have one child to pay for now! (And they're sponsoring us for PR, so we must be thankful for that :) )

Hi,
It is now looking like we will be working in Australia on a 457 (still waiting for the MD to come back from his hols). While my husband is negotiating his contract we could do with some ideas of anything we might need to include in that. We have 2 boys aged 5 and 10 and I am currently recovering from a fractured spine so am concerned about medical cover. Any ideas will be greaty appreciated. Sonia

I personally wouldn't come out here on a 457. We did 2 years ago. My husband is also a nurse and until we got the permenant through it was the biggest struggle ever. You are not entitled to Family Assist which is like tax credits in the uk and you do not qualifty for rent assist. All these things make a massive difference to your weekly income. We are from the Wirral and are seriously thinking of coming home, its been such a struggle and we just havn't settled at all.

did you qualify for tax credits while you were in the UK though because we don't get anything here that is worth more than a take away sandwich a month? It never occured to me to move to another country and expect them to pay to keep me there!!

Neither did we, but the fact is it is very expensive here, even more than cheshire and these are things to think about. We came here with 50thousand from the sale of our uk house and we have nothing left. We do not live like most people around here, getting pools and big 4x4's but the fact is my husbands wage did not cover the bills. Our savings subsidiced our living costs. It took me 18 months to get a job and all of them i was over qualified for. I am now a cleaner to help towards the bills.
