20kg being the standard economy baggage allowance of all airlines for years with the exception of Emirates and the US piece system. I'm not really sure why your so surprised at that.

If it's a migration flight they double it for you. That's what happened to me when i came here. I have been back and forth quite a few times and never had an allowance of just 20kg.

But surely you only migrate once? Even those very few airlines that allow extra for migration journeys only allow it once and then only if you have an unvalidated PR visa.

You must have been lucky, Centurion is right that 20kg has been the standard allowance for donkeys years.

20 kg is standard? Only on the really cheap budget airlines.

23 kg/50 lb is standard on both Qantas and Virgin Blue (and it's affiliates) for Aussie airlines, and is also standard for all U.S. and Canadian airlines (and they also give you TWO free bags at 23 kg/50 lb each for overseas flights).

Why don't you just fly via the U.S., and you'll get two pieces automatically without needing to ask.

Like Singapore Airlines http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_U...v=-1032473478&

Or Malaysian
http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/hq/e...gage-info.aspx

Or Etihad
http://www.etihadairways.com/SITES/E...formation.aspx

Cathay offer 23kg. Emirates 30kg (which I think means they may end up dominating the Y class sectors from LHR nowadays).

That said, most airlines will not hit you up for excess baggage until 25kg. SIA certainly.

On a completely different side note it seems that Singapore Air may discontinue flights from MAN as they have not renewed Winter timetables slots with the airport and are apparently suffering from such abysmal loads now that even the drop to 3 flights weekly they still cannot operate profitably on that sector. Its yet to be confirmed, but seems likely.

Okay, I guess that's the norm for the Asian airlines then. I'm more used to the airlines that operate from North America, where they all permit 23 kg/50 lb (or 23 kg X 2 bags for overseas flights) except for the cheap tourist vacation charters. And as I said earlier, the Aussie airlines allow one 23 kg/50 lb bag.

(Interesting, however, that on that Singapore Airlines link, if your journey involves flights to/from Canada or the U.S., you are allowed two X 23 kg bags, instead of just one 20 kg.
On Etihad airlines, to/from Canada or the U.S., you're allowed one 23 kg bag instead of one 20 kg)

As I suggested, fly via the U.S. to get around the problem.

I wish that were true! When we booked our flight for this year, we only found two companies who would offer us the 40kg, they were also the two most expensive. So we will be a family of 4 coming over with 20kgs each, it's going to be difficult, especially as we have to carry a lot of essential or sentimental items with us. But we can always buy new clothes once we are over there, can't we?

Yep, very very few do the 40kg allowance now compared to a few years back. The only ones we have seen recently on BE as still offering it are Singapore and Emirates.

I have validated my visa.:(

I am flying with Emirates, do you think if i called them, told them i am on a one way emigration flight with them, they might find it in their hearts to offer me 40kg?

Cheers Keith

Hi - I phoned Emirates 2 weeks ago and they said they no longer honour double baggage allowance for those emigrating on a one way ticket, they do however now offer 30kg per person instead of 20kg.

Can get 50kg with Emirates if you have unvalidated visa. Could always ask but they did say had to be unvalidated when I asked them...
