Default 18 hours in Singapore transit! What to do?

Dudes,

On my first visit to Perth with my bride,Transit is 18 hours!

Just curious to know.Transit starts @ 7.30 am & finishes 18 hours later. I m not fond of hotel stay either.

With need to maximize utilization of time, want to plan few visits to most sought afters place(s).

Anyone experienced this? Do Changi Intl airport has good sanitary facilities? 18 hours means before boarding to 2nd flight it's necessary have new set of clothes fit on. Just wondering where to visit for that.

They have showers there (somewhere, I wouldn't know, I'm a Pom!) and there is a free tour of the city you can do in a couple of those hours.

If you are going to be stuck anywhere there isn't a bad place at all ...

(edit) "Travellers, airport workers and visitors to Changi Airport can also get a quick 10-minute haircut by a professional hair stylist for just S$10." there's 10 minutes sorted ...

(edit edit) I always find myself losing about 45 minutes trying to find the other smokers ... so bear that in mind if it's relevant.

Okay so basically you have a whole day as you'll have to be back at the airport in the evening to check back in.

Jump in a cab and head into town for some brekki. Probably best to head towards the Raffles area and grab some food in one of the cafes around that area. The shops in Singapore don't open until 11am so save that for later if you want to do some shopping, your bride might want to as the shoes are lovely there! (sorry my weakness!).

Then you can take in Raffles, walk around the Padang (although at the moment you can't see anything because it's got a huge great stadium built on it for National Day!) see the old Court House, head down towards the river and be wowed by the new Casino building in Marina Bay (if you have time you can go in, foreigners can get in for free as long as you have your passport), or you can walk across the river and head for Raffles Place which is the heart of the CBD, walk along Boat Quay and that basically covers all the old colonial stuff.

Then in the afternoon head up to Orchard Road for a bit of shopping or off to Chinatown (after the city head along South Bridge Rd) and have a look at all the rennovated shop houses etc. Alternatively you could have a look around Bugis Street and the Malay area around Arab Street or head up to Little India.

I wouldn't aim to do too much as it is very hot and sticky there! The zoo is lovely but you won't have enough time to do it justice or even Sentosa so I'd stick to a couple of city areas.

Have an early dinner and then jump in a cab back to the airport.

There are showers at Changi airport in the Ambassador Transit Hotel which is air-side and costs around S$10.

Cab from the airport to town will be S$15-20 each way but avoid the white prestige cabs (Mercs) as you will pay double!

You can pick up maps at the airport in the Immigration area.

Hope some of this helps!

It's not necessarily out of reach in the time you have but it's just over half an hour each way in a cab to the zoo (or over an hour by public transport) and then you need at least 3 hours to look round or 4 plus if you do everything. We were up there a couple of weeks ago and we did it in 2.5 hours but missed quite a few bits out - it was so hot and humid that we found it best just to keep walking! We were doing the Night Safari afterwards as well.

Sentosa again is 15-20 mins outside the city and I haven't been there for 3 years but usually there is a lot to look around. It's mainly theme parks now but we normally like to head for the beach which is a fair walk. There is a monorail but last time we went we couldn't get on it as it was packed with Japanese tourists!

I just thought with just a day it would be better to sample the city, colonial and an ethnic area.....and some shopping!

The showers in the Ambassador Transit Lounge are very sanitary

You can do the zoo in a day, no bother, but that's all you'd manage to do. I'm with Koalakim - go into the city and just wander, eat, people watch, maybe visit a museum or two, do afternoon tea...

Check out the link in my signature for some more ideas although it's getting a bit out of date. With that limited time I wouldn't bother with Sentosa although it's changed immensely since we left two years ago.

If you don't have luggage to cart around the MRT from Changi into the city and around it is your best bet.

edit: me, i go to the dentist

Thanks .

It seems that a fair look at all major areas takes 3 -4 days in full.

Both of us will have around 20 - 22 Kg in hand luggage. Can anyone update us whether we can leave our luggage aside @ Changi until we come back from city visit?

In hand luggage ? You know the flight allowances are 7kg in economy and 14kg usually in Business/First. I only mention that because excess baggage fees are quite harsh and you could end up checking excess hand luggage into the hold.

If thats your hand luggage, how much is going into the hold? As centurion has said, 7kg is normally the limit in economy and they are fairly strict on this. The reason for the strict guidelines, is purely health and safety.

we had same transit, best to book room in ambassador transit hotel in the terminal, pretty cheap from memory!

we slept first 6 hours, showered, then went through customs and down to train station on lower ground floor.

train to city took no time and spent about 8 hours seeing all the sights.

there are singapore air tour buses which are free if you show your boarding card and they are hop on hop off so you can travel all around.

It's quicker on the underground though and a day pass was very cheap so if you know where you want to go and work out the stations that's better.

You have to have a singapore sling in the cocktail bar at raffles, they charge big time but I love eating the nuts in there and throwing shells on floor which is tradition.

Merlion also a must see and orchard road for most shopping malls on one road I have ever seen!

We then headed to airport and by time had showered and changed it was about time to get to the gate so after a little shopping we caught flights and felt refreshed, it was like flying a couple of days later than previous flight!

Sentosa island can be accessed on free singapore air bus but when I was last there in 2005 I thought it was boring!

BTW: As you are already 'airside' in transit there is no check in to weigh your hand luggage so any shopping wasn't an issue it was just a few extra carrier bags as if we had shopped in the airport. Nobody battered an eyelid!

Hi

If you don't go for a hotel room then there is a left luggage place in the arrivals hall as well as in the transit lounges.

Becareful with hand luggage when you are flying out of the UK as they do check, we didn't get weighed this time but had to show them the bag and make it look light . They don't seem to worry when you leave Singapore.

The Merlion is lovely but he's covered in scaffolding at the moment, probably undergoing a renno before National Day!

When will you be there? From anytime now up until National Day (Aug 9) everywhere is in preparation for their big day, after that things should return to normal.

We had afternoon tea in Raffles this year as we hadn't done it for a while, if you were there on a Sunday then you could go for one of the many champagne brunches on offer at the hotels and get totally sozzled!

KK

p.s. I didn't have to go to the dentist this year ....yay!!! That's another thing make sure you get any dental work done before emmigrating!
