176 VISA - Question regarding Government jobs
We are currently in the process of applying for the 176 Visa - Skiled Sponsored Visa for ACT.
We are getting mixed stories on jobs in Canberra as most are government based positions which are for Australian Citizens..... would the above visa allow us to apply and be employed for such jobs?
My backround is as I.T Mgr.
Cheers

I'd be interested to know if this also applies to jobs with the regional governments? (specifically QLD) I'll be over on a 175 visa (if all goes well!)

Re: 176 VISA - Question regarding Government jobs
I am on a 175 visa...and had the same question regarding a Federal police job...so phoned the head of the department I wanted to apply for. He told me that there are some jobs that are only open to citizens because of security (??)..but that for skilled roles which they may struggle to find a suitable candidate they would accept applications from residents. However, the HR department refused to accept my application!!!!
So I went back to the dept manager and he eventually offered me a temporary position, with view to moving to permanent at a later date.
So moral of the story is, that some positions may be advertised as Citizens only but it I would advise to speak directly to the person recruiting.
Hope this helps

Re: 176 VISA - Question regarding Government jobs
There is no absolute requirement for Australian citizenship.
However, there is a general expectation that a person who is to be engaged as an Australian Public Service (APS) employee will be an Australian citizen, although non-citizens can be engaged in certain circumstances.
Like a number of other countries, the Australian Government considers that it is appropriate for government employees to be Australian citizens as a demonstration of their commitment to, and long-term stake in, the future of Australia.
Section 22(8) of the PS Act requires an agency head not to engage, as an APS employee, a person who is not an Australian citizen unless the agency head considers it appropriate to do so.

Re: 176 VISA - Question regarding Government jobs
Anyone know what the situation is in relation to WA government- and also is it reasonable to assume that there are at least as many non Commonwealth government jobs as there are Commonwealth jobs in WA. Thanks

My guess is that the States will have more employees in their State, than the Commonwealth would have in that State.
