13 days in Melbourne, where to go?
I have a good book, "sightseeing 200kms around Melbourne" but there seems to be so much to do and see, wondered if anyone could help me sort out an itinery of the best places to go/see.
List so far: 1. G.O.R. - no brainer 2. Melbourne itself inc. St. Kilda etc. 3. Philip Island 4. The Dandenongs 5. Wilson's Promontory 6. Mornington Peninsular BTW - 3 kids aged 5,7 & 9. Going last 2 weeks in Feb. |
You're off to a good start, wouldn't bother with Wilsons prom though.
Suburbs in mel ..Carlton (Lygon St) for eating, Fitzroy, hippy thing Prahran..weird, St Kilda on a Sunday..great craft market for pressies Coburg drive in cinema, lots of people in pyjamas Melbourne aquarium and zoo ( city) Two day trip along Great Ocean Road, stay overnight in Apollo Bay casino, southbank(city) Federation square to see how we can spend millions of dollars on nothing of interest. healsville sanctuary ( wildlife) Ricketts Sanctuary..enlightening 2 days on the peninsula...you won't want to leave. Arthurs seat chairlift (peninsula) Phillip Island is ok but not much to do.Visit the Vietman Veterans museum on the way in. If I can think of any more I'll write... |
I would also agree with Healesville Sanctuary - for the kids (altho I went 3 times in 18 months..and I'm >30!!). Take an eski and BBQ stuff if you can.
Moonlight Cinema (www.moonlight.com.au) - it's in the Botanical Gardens - you might get an evening with a kids film. This is one of my fave things in Melbourne - take a big picnic, some rugs and a bottle of wine. Awesome! Arthur's Seat chairlift is still closed as far as I know, as the cable snapped last summer. You can still drive to the top tho and take in the amazing views. |
Thanks, keep 'em comin'!
BTW Why not Wilson's prom? thought it sounded like a nice quiet place, totally unspoilt, remote, wild etc.? |
If you're into a bit of a piss-pot you could check out some of the wineries in the Yarra Valley or down on the Mornington Peninsula.

I love the Prom, but it's a long way to go. If you were staying longer you could spend a couple of days down there, but with thirteen days I'd stick to places a bit closer to the city, especially with three small kids.
