Extra 111,000 call Australia home
January 10, 2005
NEW figures for migrants and refugees show the numbers arriving in 2003-2004 were the highest for a decade.

Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone today said more than 111,000 people arrived and settled in Australia - a rise of almost 20,000 on the previous year.

"This means that in the past 10 years arrivals have increased by 60 per cent, with well over 200 countries represented," she said.

The bulk of the 2003-04 migrants came from the United Kingdom, with 18,000 making the move.

Other major contributors were New Zealand, China, India, South Africa, the Sudan and the Philippines

The main states to benefit were New South Wales (40,561), Victoria (28,028), Queensland (20,284) and Western Australia (15,411).

South Australia took in 4773, up slightly on the previous year, Tasmania's share was 884 and the Northern Territory accepted 596.

The ACT recorded a slight fall in the number of settler arrivals to 1050 in 2003-04.

Just wondering where the extra 10,000 on top of the 18,000 came from. Presumed it was a typo but I might be missing something.
