1 piece of Advice !
Lets all post our ULTIMATE piece of advice for newbies arriving IN australia !!
Mine would be, when buying or renting a home, and you ask the agent or the owner, can you get Broadband ??
And they harmoniously reply YEP ya can !!!
BULLSHIT !!
Ask them for the telephone number of the home, and the operator they are with, example : Telstra
Then phone Telstra etc or whomever and find out CATEGORICALLY what broadband services are available, what speeds, etc etc
Weve been led up the garden path a few times, in this matter.
Anyone else got some sooopa doopa advice ??

Where to live......RENTAL AGENTS
Be very careful on your "first rental"
Try to get a short term lease,
Read everything, and make sure you get the green booklet, gives you the rules and obligations, most rental agents wont give you this....
Inspect the property with the agent before and after, and get fixed quotes on cleaning etc when you move out. if your not happy, put everything in writing to the agent and Cc somebody in the rental office, manager say.
Once you get your rental makes sure its near civilisation.
As a newby and being unfamiliar in Aus it can seem very quiet and daunting, sat in, on dark nights at 8pm, with everywhere shut or closing. (dependent on where you are ofcourse).

ok
Have you ever seen the episode in friends where whats his face gets a new apartment, but before he does, he is interviewed etc and grilled by the "management"
Well thats kinda like a body corporate, they say what you can and cannot do, and can police it vehemently.
Exampl:
Client of ours, went to body corp, got written approval for front of dwelling air con install. She luves in a town house.
2 months later, the actual owner of the neighbouring house, made complaint to body corp, and as he wasnt given notice, they had to resind their decision, forcing lady to pay again to have it moved.
Its bullshit wrapped in odour eaters i tellya lol

Don't buy new cars until you have given it time to know if you really need to spend so much or buy such a big beasty!

Don't ever - EVER - trust an estate agent!
In case you didn't get that: Don't ever - EVER - trust an estate agent!
In case you didn't understand - oh, what the hell, you don't deserve advice!

Re: 1 piece of Advice !
My piece of advice......DONT compare anything here to anything that you know from the UK. Prices, service, cars, houses....anything!!
Its a different country!!!! If you start to compare to the UK you wont get an accurate insight to what its like to live here no matter how hard or accurate you think you are.....seasonal changes, experience etc will always effect your initial experiences here.
Also,
Be aware...living will be more expensive in the first 12 months or so because you are setting up, you have pantry's to fill and as its a new country, it takes time to learn to find the bargains....No matter how full your container is there will always be stuff you need to buy...so after 3 months dont judge living expenses on what you have spent up to that point.....wait a while and it will settle down!!!
Gawd I could go on and on with these.....

My advise....make a MASSVE effort to meet people and make friends, especially locals. Expats can be a great source of shared experience, but the locals can help you out in the most unexpected ways. If like I did, you're coming to oz without being here before, then your local knowledge won't be any better than a junior school kid. And my experience has been that most Aussies will be only too happy to help you out once they get to know you
