1,000 GBP at the current rate would get you 1,663.30 AUD after fees, at this moment, at Currency online ie: 1.663
or
100,000 GBP at the current rate would get you 167,770 AUD after fees, at this moment, at Currency online ie: 1.677
So a £1,000,000 win on Ernie is now worth $1.68m, instead of the $2.89m that it would have been worth a few years ago
Knowing my luck I will win it today, instead of back in 2003

I am expecting a bankers draft..in Pounds.. but the thing is that I will lose so much converting it into dollars..I have no bank account in the UK now .. but will be going there for three weeks in June. What I wanted to ask is.. could I open a UK account.. How do I do it over here? Or do you think I should wait until I go over and open an account then.. It will make it easier foe me to pay for hotel etc as I have no idea how much I will need and do not want to take too many pounds..as will have to change them back again when I get back..anyone??

I stupidly closed my uk bank acct when I left

HSBC had assured us we would be OK as we had 3 years banking history in OZ, the application went in and it was refused.
We came back and had to pay $200 for them to do it here, amazingly once we paid the dosh it was approved in 2 weeks.
Unless someone will act as your landlord or employer I would guess it might not be easy. Either that or I look like a terrorist or drug baron

Looking at the prize winners listings, on the Premium Bond website, I do see the odd winner whose address is shown as Australia. No doubt the ATO will keep tabs on those ones too....

1.68.5 at the start of Monday - apparently down to Labour doing better in the polls.

I looked on betfair yesterday and Lab are 15/1 to win, a brave person could hedge GBP vs Lab win!
Tories are favs but a hung parliament a close 2nd, no overall result would be the worst possible outcome, both for the pound and the UK as a whole.

Interest rate rise is pretty much a given.....

....and a continuing drop in the GBP/AUD rate is most likely also as the selloff in Sterling continues.
Expected Forex range today in the GBP/AUD rate of 1.6900 to 1.7075

"The markets showed sterling exactly what they thought about another 5 years of a Labour government as the prospect of a hung parliament loomed closer and confidence in the UK currency evaporated"
"The Aussie dollar has continued its surge in the currency markets and looks set to continue as the Aussie currency hits multi-year highs against an under pressure pound, breaking under the AUS$1.69 level"
