When Labour first came to power I actually thought they did quite well for the first few years but then slowly it all seemed to fall apart with more stealth taxes etc. Things just seemed to have got worse since Tony went and left Gordon at the helm.
Yes, they've had all this time in office so you just can't blame outside factors as I'm pretty sure things were on the downturn in the UK before the GFC happened. Gordon said that the UK was in a good place to weather the storm but looks like they've taken one of the biggest hits.
Britain needs a strong figure at the helm now and I don't think anyone in politics these days really fits the bill.

I'm not sure who to vote for, but I am in no doubt who I won't be voting for.
I see you're in Mornington - nice spot!

Hi Freebo - Yes, it is a lovely spot - we always say it's like Sussex with gum trees! We lived in Brighton (Brighton UK to Brighton Mel
) when we first got here and although it was nice being by the sea we found we missed the countryside.
I must look into the voting from overseas for the election thing so I can have my say!
Hey, maybe we could form the Expats Party - all policies only to benefit those having left or about to leave the UK, surely a winner?

Just before leaving I calculated how much tax I had paid the UK government (not an onerous task as I had been doing tax returns since I was 23) and it was quite shocking.

They will be calling the Pound the " Pommie Peso" soon.

I've just checked the exchange rate and the GBP has now broken the 1.70 barrier and is trading at 1.68. Thought I was joking when I said 1.50 was possible, now I'm not too sure.
Time to book a ticket to UK. Now that we are into March, I guess that their airports and roads will be opening soon

Ad nauseum I suspect - could be the new catchphrase.

I'm guessing the pound will be very volatile now up until the election. They are talking about a 0.25% rate rise this week so that will have been built into the current trading.
Lets just hope that whoever gets in at the election has a clear lead and a good policy to tackle the deficit otherwise there is no hope for the pound until it is well and truely out of recession and growth is improving which on it's current performance may be some way off yet.
The OP is right - Ozforex spot rate is 1.68
