We're trying to transfer our money at the moment-exchange rate is hovering around $1.78. Has anyone done it recently? What have people got?

You'll get about 1.78, as that's the rate. May go up or down in the near future by a few cents, but if a recovery ever comes about and you want to wait then possibly a few years until going back over th $2 mark?
For myself did a few investments in shares and made a bit of cash, now going to lose a bit of cash when we exchange (which will be very soon as off in less than 2 weeks )

What happened to the pound yesterday? Dropped 3 cents...yikes!!!!!!

I'm having a bit of a break over pound watching constantly at the moment as we got the last bit we needed over but am checking it every day just in case it gets better for the last little bit ha ha ha......

It was doing nicely before the Xmas hols, I see the A$ has improved a bit against the US$ but can't all be down to that?

I the the OP is right....will be a long time before we see $2 again

I'm also watching and cursing.

Seems the market is getting worried about the possibility of a hung parliament and thus no strong cuts in spending/rises in taxes to bring the deficit under control. Good BoE action on Thursday or an opinion poll that makes it look like the Conservatives will get in will boost the pound.

In the slightly longer term there is a reasonable chance that post-election whoever gets in will have to deal with the deficit harshly, and that should improve the position of the pound.

Here's to 2p on income tax and a 10% cut in government spending, once I've gone.

Yup....I had a great day's shopping today (in Scotland at the moment)!

I am finding the UK incredibly cheap...and not just because of the exchange rate...even at $2.50 most things would be cheaper.

OMG!! Just looked at transfering again and it's gone down to 1.58!! How is this possible? If I exchange now, I'd lose over $1500. I so should have done it on Monday-argh!!

The rate is $1.75 so I don't know where you're looking....someone like Ozforex would be offering you $1.73 - $1.74 right now.
