Threads organically develop and frankly what else is there to say on the strict subject of exchange rates. Ohh look it went up a point today, ohh look it went down a point and not enough to make any statistical inference. I think we all know that Sterling is in the crapper to stay for a while and the Australian dollar is riding high and will for the forseeable future. I do not need some mystical power to predict that.
An exchange rate is nothing without something to compare it against. The relative value of what it could buy for instance. For example, a house. Its also interesting to consider the relative spending powers of people resident in the UK and Australia. A lot of people considering moving back the other way would find that interesting no doubt.
Think yourself lucky this thread hasnt been taken over by the regular "turn a thread into a rubbish version of MSN to kill it off" brigade

The comparison I'm making is 5 miles out from Londons CBD as opposed to 5miles (or 8k's out from Melbournes CBD)... in a semi detached, 3 beds.... probably somewhere in South London. Most houses in Melbourne are detached obviously, but I do have neighbours right on my boundary, with their house as my border.
I'm of the opinion that It could become a straight swap in the not to distant future.
Surely thats the biggest financial factor in anyones move,.... how much house they can own with the money they bring ?

Ahh, but, as they are all detached, aren't all of them at a premium price in comparison to the UK then ?
And in Australia, the smaller terraced houses, which are more like the UK ones, are cheaper than the Australian detached, therefore confirming that a premium is being paid for a Detached house here.
eg:
3 Bed Townhouse (terraced) for $220,000. This is in a Greater Sydney suburb where the median Detached House price is $370,00.

If people want cheaper than Median price, they can always drop down to a terraced house, if they choose. But most people prefer something better.
A similar price and location/distance to capital city in the UK.
2 bed terraced - Offers in Excess of £120,000

Average prices for this area are:
Detached £250,312
Semi-detached £154,560
Terrace £117,919

Quite correct, but factor in the size of Australia, compared to the uk,and also the cheap and light building techniques,Australian houses are looking expensive and poorly equiped, compared to the rest of the world. Will they fall in price probably not as everyone is a landlord in Australia and has a vested interest.

Havent seen any comments on my visits to my London board on this as yet.
Looks like the climb is back on. Time to stop procrastinating if people are going to take advantage of this unusual real estate price differential between the UK and Aus.

The point I'm trying to make is for the first time I can recall, I can now buy probably 70 to 80 pct of a house in London, with a straight trade of my house. At one stage it was down below 50 pct.... this is mostly due to exchange rates.
The comparison I'm making is 5 miles out from Londons CBD as opposed to 5miles (or 8k's out from Melbournes CBD)... in a semi detached, 3 beds.... probably somewhere in South London. Dont get too excited by the rise...
"Fitch Ratings has warned that the recent house price rise reports are only a
temporary respite."

Ultimately its all piss and wind and nobody knows of course.

Granted the vasy majority of Aus houses are 'detatched' but thats a bit misleading due to the fact that you live virtually ontop of the neighbours houses...they build them rediculously close to each other.
Infact IMHO i reckon you have far more privacy in a UK semi-detached than you do in a new build Aussie house.

The older ones are better, and by that I mean about 10 years +

100% bang on
Thats why we've just bought a 20 year old house...atleast it has some space from the neighbours. We're currently in a new build rental and the proximity to next door is doing my head in
