It's not cheap living here, I think you'll find: but for deffo thinking about a base level at which we might speculate and send some cash back to the UK

It's worth pointing out that not all Australians live in that setup - the ones who don't are the lucky ones I reckon! There is a whole life out there of people who have avoided it - in some cases quite easily.

Just wondering about the merits of denisfication (call it playing devil's advocate if you wish). Comparing London and Melly.

London
- twice the population
- half the diameter (spread)
- quarter of the size
- 10 times the density

So according to the proponents of densification, London should be easier to get around than Melly (as it's geographically smaller and much denser). That's not what I find in practice.

Has been dropping 2 cents a day recently, so would expect it to continue down the pan tomorrow, no idea why there was a blip today. Not happy about it but what can one do

Just bide your time. It is unlikely to stay like this in the longer term.

Keep pound watching......

Maybe all the bad news has come out of the UK now?

Anyway, to top of the saga of the plummeting pound we decided to change some money before it got much worse (with the thinking that if it does dive to 1.60-1.50 then we'll send some back again!!!) so we did the deal and guess what - the UK bank won't let us transfer the whole lot in one hit!

Basically (and this is our bank RBS) as you are overseas you are limited to internet and telephone banking so they only let you do 10k a day. We had 3 days to get the money to the exchange house and we are doing over 30k - panic! We spoke to a million people at our bank and finally one person said if I fax you over a CHAPS form then you have to COURIER it back to the branch and then they will do the transfer in one go - so that's what we've done. However, we have since found out that you can ask for longer to get the money to the exhange house ......so anyone in Oz and wanting to get a large sum over then make sure you get as long as poss to transfer the money.

It's bad enough having to suffer the dismal rate at the moment but then to loose the deal because the flipping bank won't allow you to get at you money is really sticking the pins in!

It would seem apparently that since the credit crunch the banks don't actually like giving your money back to you!

So now I think we watch the rate each day and just transfer bits over as and when and pray pray it gets even a little bit stronger.

Therefore anyone still in the UK and planning to leave your funds behind make sure you get things put in place with your bank to allow you to transfer large amounts in one go - so set up fax requests etc. They kept saying to us well if you could come in...... ha ha ha

Until at least next May i'd say, unless the government actually take a reality check and chuck up the interest rates

[[/QUOTE]

The chart shows the pound falls, pulls back for a day or two ,then goes lower.

Can't see any difference to this yet.

...and that's exactly what it seems to be doing right now.
Same activity as 5 days ago....1.5 steps forward, then 2 steps back.

Too early in the game I suspect to see any real sign of a trend reversal, or even stabilisation of the rate for that matter.

Until the 10 day moving average starts to show a levelling off, you would suspect most would be quite hesitant to be predicting any improvement.

We're off in January and our savings are going to furnish house and buy car, so can't bide time . Honestly think £ will go to AU$1.60 at some point in the near future. Not that we have a great amount of cash but our expected around 23/24 thousand AU$ is now looking more like AU18k or even less.
Might have to have a re-think with what to do with savings and how to finance car etc, but far too busy with other stuff at present

Many experts are predicting 1:1.50 at some point in early 2010.
