Default 1.2 million Brits call Australia Home

Just thought some of you might find this interesting. "According to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 27% of Australia's resident population were born overseas, as at June 2010.

People born in the United Kingdom continued to be the largest group of overseas-born residents, accounting for 1.2 million people."

It's actually got me wondering what population of other countries residents are born overseas too. I believe it's higher than 27% in Canada. I recall reading something about where their migrants were from, but can't for the life of me remember how long ago I read it or where I read it. I'm loosing it

Saw a similar story in The Age today, but with a different slant...Asian migration a tour de force

Nothing more than an age thing

There's been a lot of debate recently on why so many BE people voice their disapproval of Perth. One suggestion is that maybe there are more whingeing Brits going there so our perception is naturally skewed on here.

Maybe there are some figures on the ABS that would enlighten us. Will have a look when I have a mo.

According to this it is 19.8 per cent in Canada as at the 2006 census: http://www.thestar.com/News/Canada/article/282347

And 11% for the UK according to this (unverified): http://the-salfordian.com/one-in-eve...s-born-abroad/

The highest numbers of migrants go to Sydney and Melbourne...but for Brits I think it's Perth & Brisbane ( I think they look at the climate chart first then everything else next! ) ...so there could be something in it, but Brisbane doesn't cop it like Perth does.

That would be interesting to know.

Course Perth is really dry compared to Brissie.

Ah.

But isn't it pretty "arid" compared to Brissie in spite of that?

Yes because in general Brisbane gets warm sub-tropical summer storms (and dry winters) so it is delivered by fire hose in short blasts where Perth gets its rain as cold winter rain and has dry summers.

I think most Brits who come to Perth do so out of work choices rather than climate, though it does have a say in the pin being forced into the maps location

Can't help wondering how many Brits live in Australia but don't call it "home'?
