They are everywhere! Personally I find they're ok, worth a flutter now and again. But, there's hundreds of people who sit on them all day. They must be losing a fortune!?

last night on Today Tonight they were going on about how people are gambling to much on the pokies.. have they only just noticed?

where I come from they are banned, so it was a shock to see so many of them when I got out here.. they are everywhere

Pokies, or the latest craze of online poker - one way or another, there'll always be someone waiting to part these people from their money. I don't mnd them personally, but I can walk past them. I feel sorry for those who can't. As for spending $300 as day - OMG :scared:

I had the misfortune to walk through a pokies room in a bar yesterday to get to the carpark. I was really saddened at the sight of people sitting on stools, endlessly clicking the buttons and piling money in. In fact many of them dont put money in they have a card which slots into the side of the machine!! All i could think of was how sad their lives must be that they feel the need to waste a beautiful day in a dark dingy room all alone, feeding money into a machine that will give them no more than a couple of hundred bucks if they are REALLY lucky!

The clubs with pokie machines are supposed to subscribe to some "responsible gaming" policy, yet the number of clubs who run promotions which actually encourages people, not only to play the bloody things, but to bet big to get say an over $10 win to get some draw ticket is alarming.

Some things are beginning to change, albeit incredibly slowly. You can no longer get cash advances off a credit card from ATMs inside the club (now theres a scary thought!), and certainly in QLD, the machines will no longer accept $50 and $100 notes. Personally, I think all clubs should be banned from having ATMs at all on the premises. I believe VIC is looking at doing this.

From next year, pokie players who smoke will have to either stop smoking, or actually leave their machines for a few minutes to nip outside for a smoke.

Dont hold your breathe however waiting for the government to curb poker machine excesses: they rake in over $4 billion each year in tax from poker machine takings

They are illegal in Western Australia, apart from in the Burswood Casino, so you don't see them anywhere in Perth.

I saw someone hitting a Pokie machine yesterday after he had a feature and it didn't pay anything. Sad twat.
We used to play the Pokies a bit when we first arrived here, but some people spend all day on the damn things?!
Having said that, playing them online is probably the only way to do it as they pay out 99% instead of 91% in pubs. Plus, I know someone who won $30,000 on one feature at - now that's a good win.
Australia is beautiful - why spend a day inside a dim Pokie room when there's SO much to see?
Oh well, I suppose the "Love them or Hate them" debate with Pokies will rumble on for ages...... :confused:
