Sorry, cant be of much help. Do remember when we got here that second hand cars were very expensive, compared to similar vehicles back home, but that new cars, particularly Japanese models, were cheaper.

Had thought of buying a smaller car something like a Holden Vectra but then there's limited boot space. We will have to buy all our household furniture etc, at least with the Falcon wagon we would be able to transport most things without too much trouble and it would be convenient for weekend camping trips. Had also thought about a Magna but don't know much about Mitsubishi, have always been a Ford man but i'm not afraid of a change.

Holden Commodore, Mitsibishi Magna or Ford Falcon are all safe bets. Thousands of them available so you'll have a good choice.
$6000 isn't going to get you much though, we paid $5000 for a 96 Toyota Hilux (2WD)

When we first arrived we only had $4000 for a car, we bought a Mitsibishi Magna and 4 years later we still had it! This was in Mackay and this was the cheapest we found at the time,we have just moved to Newcastle area and there are loads of cheap second hand cars knocking around for around that price range so there is cars out there! Just get looking good luck

Definitely Ford Falcon or fairmont for that sort of money - $6000 should get you one which will be a few years old, but which has probably been well looked after.

drive.com.au or ebay (aust) will give you a good idea of what's out there. They're reliable cars, safe - not great on fuel economy, but there are lots of them about so spare parts are relatively cheap and the mechanics are familiar with them.

Or a Commodore which are nicer to drive than the old school Falcon with the big heavy straight 6 in the front.
My money would be on the Magna though, good comfy cars with front wheel drive

Thumbs up Re: $6000 Budget for car, what would you buy?

For $6k you should be able to get a Magna on dual fuel, with a little haggling.

Which is the best magna to get? would like electric windows and some creature comforts, we like to be able to lock the rear windows to stop the kids messing about, so would like power windows all round. Do you think the Magna is the best choice out of the main three? Ford, Holden and Mitsubishi.

Thanks
Al

Magna!! as reliable as an Aussie jumping a red light Don't bother with a Boganadore. Falcons keep going and are bigger but the little things go wrong.

Yep, definitely a Magna. I just bought a 98 model for 3k. had a fuel line problem which was fixed on warranty.
Cheap to repair if it goes wrong, reliable and very comfy for driving here. Don't even bother looking for anything else at that price.
