Convert that into British money you would be able to buy a house at £217 to £260 thousand pounds. Depending where you are buying, in a good suburb in Brisbane would get you a 3/4 bedroom house. Have no idea on the rest of the Oz cities.

You can use the OzForex retail customer quote tool to convert. Probably reflects a more realistic rate than the inter-bank rate quoted by most websites

Julie,
Don't forget in some area's of Oz you can get bit off the government to put towards your first property. Last i read in Sydney it was $7000 not sure about other states though.

Umm... actually if you divided $500K by 0.4188 you would end up with an expensive £1.193Million.I think you managed a typo here and should have multiplied by 0.4188.... this would work.
However if you divide $500K by todays AUD/GBP rate, which is 2.3677 (Interbank rate which is the format the rates are usually posted in UK/US sites), you would end up with £211K appx.(as correctly estimated in your calculation)
The AUD has strenghtened considerably against Sterling within the past month or so, with the highs of up to 2.3163 (yesterday) and lows of up to 2.4251 (25/05/07) Just as a recent comparision! Hope we all get the AUD lows of 2.40-2.50 when we actually convert.

Surely it would have been easier (& quicker) to google 'online currency convertors' and do the leg work yourself instead of wasting bandwidth by posting that on here?

Mate, there's no call for that.

This is an online forum and people are entitled to ask whatever they want. It's up to each individual if they choose to reply.
