Australia may leave some people better off, but it would be a fallacy (and unfair to the OP) to say everyone ends up that way.

Weird though is it not? How can anyone struggle on £50000, you could have a good standard of living on that in the UK, so unless OZ has suddenley had an increase of cost of living of about 100% i just cant figure!!

But I don't have kids and probably have a very different lifestyle from most people on here. Doesn't change the fact that people have a right to post their opinions though The more different experiences there are, the more better, surely .

I'd love to be on $50k, never mind $100k.

I don't think Melbourne is particularly more expensive than any other Australian city.

Cheers Valespark,
While I was making the lasagne I just thought to myself - I actually can't say we've ever had a "bargain" here. Cost of stuff is ridiculous. So much more competition back home where prices are far,far lower! And I can say this 'coz I was back there a few months ago, before anyone jumps in.
Monthly train tickets, extremely high rent, daily living costs, food and clothes shopping, internet, petrol, etc, etc - the costs for each of these out here is WAY above what I'd pay back home. ( aside from petrol )
We've had one weekend break since we got here.It was sh*t, the accomodation was rubbish and over-priced.
If one more person says to me "why are you leaving here, don't you just love the lifestyle???" I may have to drop my nice girl image!!
WHAT LIFESTYLE!!!!?????? I hardly see my husband coz his work expects him to stay on 'till all hours, house prices are so high we haven't been able to afford anything, we have no spare money to do any travelling and I haven't been able to find any work so I've been more isolated out here than ever before!! WTF!!!?????
VS - 5 weeks 'til you leave = home for crimbo!!

Our income is only half of yours and we DO have the lifestyle. I don't have to work, OH doesn't need to do overtime as his salary is higher here, we were lucky enough to buy a fab house in a gorgeous area. We can enjoy national park walks on our doorstep, but still have facilities a 5 min drive away.
The girls have a host of activities to choose from, no problem getting places and costs are generally affordable. I find the cost of living probably on par overall. But there are many free events and beautiful places to go - we also rarely have to pay for parking and few places are crowded.
I guess it all depends how you spend your money...

Re: $100,000 salary in Melbourne
Look, I think someone's own financial situation is a personal issue and not for a public forum stoning! No-one can really say "yeah right - if only I had $100,000 salary" coz everyone's individual situation is so varied and complex!
I wish I had a $200,000 income but I'm not going to make someone who's earning that feel crap in comparision to what I have now because they may have SO many reasons for not having spare cash left over at the end of the month.
Who really cares!!???
I think we should stop comparing income and outgoings and just try to live with whatever we have!!! I didn't mention our own income so that I could get a slagging off on here.

Yup, we've just done our's too M.
We've got a joint income here of about $120,000, but we don't have any spare cash left over after paying for stuff here!!!!! Rent takes up most of it.
Infact, David ended up OWING money for tax when we did it last week!!!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Based on my piddly income and all the courses I'd paid for myself I ended up getting a $1100 return - which soon reduced to pay off David's tax owed!!!!
Hmph!
Only 13 weeks till we leave BTW.

Because the majority of households in Melbourne will be earning less than $120K.
I really find it hard to believe that you struggle on that salary, you are obviously living well beyond your means in Australia.
BTW, I was paying £600 a month for trains in the UK.
